Video recorders (NVR/XVR)

Video recorders (NVR/XVR)

Video recorders in this category are network video recorders (NVR) and hybrid XVR units that record and store footage from IP and CCTV cameras. They suit homes, shops and small to mid-sized businesses building or upgrading a surveillance system. Our range includes recorders from Dahua Technology, Uniview, Hanwha Vision and Hikvision.

How to choose a video recorder

NVR or XVR. An NVR records from IP cameras over a network, while an XVR is a hybrid unit that normally accepts analogue HD cameras and often some IP cameras too. If you already have coaxial cabling, an XVR can save you rewiring. For a new installation, an NVR is usually the more flexible choice.

Channels. The channel count is the number of cameras the recorder can handle. Models in our range include 4 and 8 channel versions, and the range also covers larger recorders for bigger sites. Leave some spare channels so you can add cameras later without replacing the recorder.

Resolution. The recorder must be able to handle the resolution of your cameras. Some models in our range support 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels) and others go up to 4096 x 2400 pixels. Higher resolution shows more detail such as number plates or faces, but it needs more storage and bandwidth.

Storage. Check how many hard drive bays the recorder has, the maximum capacity it supports and whether drives are included. Maximum supported capacities in our range include 10 TB, 16 TB and 20 TB. The number of cameras, their resolution, the compression format and how many days you want to keep footage all affect how much space you need.

Network and PoE. Check the Ethernet speed and whether the recorder has built-in PoE ports to power cameras directly. Without them, you will need a separate PoE switch or injectors. Some recorders in our range have a single RJ-45 port with 10/100 Mbit/s speeds, which is enough for smaller systems.

Video recorder brands we carry

  • Dahua Technology: a large Chinese surveillance manufacturer that makes both NVR and XVR recorders, and it has the biggest share of this category in our range.
  • Uniview: a Chinese maker focused on IP video surveillance, offering recorders designed to work with its own cameras.
  • Hanwha Vision: the South Korean company formerly known as Hanwha Techwin, best known for its Wisenet cameras and recorders.
  • Hikvision: one of the world's largest video surveillance manufacturers, with recorders for small and large installations.
  • Ubiquiti: known for its UniFi Protect system, in which recorders work with UniFi cameras and are managed through one interface.
  • Axis Communications: the Swedish company that introduced the first network camera in 1996 and still focuses on network video.

Also in our range: Foscam.

Video recorder FAQ

What is the difference between an NVR and an XVR?

An NVR records digital video from IP cameras over a network, whereas an XVR is a hybrid recorder that takes analogue HD cameras and often IP cameras as well. Choose an XVR if you want to keep existing coaxial cabling. Choose an NVR for a new network-based system.

How many channels do I need?

You need at least one channel per camera, and it is sensible to add a few spare ones. A small home system often fits a 4 channel recorder, and 8 channels give room for a larger property or a small shop. Larger premises need recorders with more channels.

How much storage does a CCTV recorder need?

It depends on the number of cameras, their resolution, the compression format and how many days of footage you want to keep. A higher resolution or continuous recording uses more space than motion-triggered recording. Recorders in our range support maximum capacities such as 10 TB, 16 TB and 20 TB.

Can I use cameras from a different brand?

Often yes, but it depends on the recorder. Many recorders support the ONVIF standard, which allows cameras and recorders from different makers to work together, although some advanced features may only work with the same brand. Check the compatibility details of both devices before buying.
