KVM switches

KVM switches

KVM switches let one keyboard, mouse and monitor control several computers, so they suit home offices, workshops, server cupboards and anyone running a desktop alongside a work laptop. Our range in this category is small and currently comes from INLINE. The right model depends on port count, video standard and USB support.

How to choose a KVM switch

Number of computers. Count the machines you need to control now and add one spare port for later. Common KVM switches handle two, four, eight or sixteen computers, and larger units are usually built for server racks rather than desks.

Video connection and resolution. The switch must match the video output of your computers: HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI or VGA. Check the maximum resolution and refresh rate as well. A 4K monitor at 60 Hz needs a switch that explicitly supports it, otherwise the picture may drop to 30 Hz or a lower resolution.

USB support. A KVM switch normally connects the keyboard and mouse through USB. Some models add extra USB ports for a printer, webcam or storage drive, which are then shared between the computers. If you use a gaming mouse or a keyboard with extra keys, check that the switch passes through all of its functions.

Switching method. Most switches change computers with a front-panel button. Others add keyboard hotkeys or a wired remote, which is easier when the switch sits behind the desk or inside a rack. Fast switching matters if you change computers many times a day.

Cables and mounting. Many KVM switches need a separate cable set for each connected computer, and these are not always included. Check this before ordering, along with whether the switch is a desktop unit or a rack-mount model.

  • INLINE: a German brand known for cables, adapters and connectivity accessories, which makes it a familiar name for people who need a switch that fits into an existing wired setup.

KVM switch FAQ

What does a KVM switch do?

A KVM switch lets you operate several computers with one keyboard, one mouse and one monitor. KVM stands for keyboard, video and mouse. You change between computers with a button, a hotkey or a remote, so you do not need a separate set of peripherals for each machine.

Will a KVM switch reduce picture quality?

It can if the switch does not support the resolution and refresh rate of your monitor. A switch rated for your monitor's resolution, together with good quality cables, should show the same picture as a direct connection. Always check the maximum resolution in the specifications before buying.

Can I use a KVM switch with a laptop and a desktop PC?

Yes, as long as the laptop has a video output and a USB port, or you use a suitable adapter or dock. Connect the laptop to one switch port and the desktop to another. The shared monitor, keyboard and mouse then work with whichever computer is selected.

What is the difference between a KVM switch and a monitor switch?

A monitor switch only changes the video signal, while a KVM switch also changes the keyboard and mouse. If you only want one screen to show several sources, a simple video switch is enough. If you want to type on and control each computer from the same desk, you need a KVM switch.
