Access control and alarms

Access control and alarms covers the products that decide who can enter a property and warn you when something is wrong: keypads, card and fob readers, smart locks, door sensors, motion detectors and sirens. It suits homes, shops and small offices that want entry control or intrusion alerts alongside security cameras.

This category has no models listed at the moment, so the guidance below is general.

How to choose access control and alarm equipment

Access method. PIN keypads are cheap and simple, but codes get shared and overheard. Cards and fobs can be cancelled individually if one is lost, and fingerprint readers remove the need to carry anything, although they can struggle with wet or worn fingers.

Wired or wireless. Wireless sensors are quick to fit and suit rented homes or finished walls, but their batteries need checking from time to time. Wired devices take more effort to install and are steadier in larger buildings or new builds where cabling is easy to run.

Sensors and coverage. Door and window contacts protect entry points, while passive infrared motion detectors cover rooms and passages. If you have pets, look for a detector with pet immunity, and fit a siren loud enough to be heard outside the property.

Power backup. Electric strikes and magnetic locks stop working without power unless they have a battery or UPS behind them. With load shedding in South Africa, check whether a lock fails open or stays locked when power drops, and choose the behaviour that suits the door.

Compatibility. Check whether a device works with the alarm panel, recorder or cameras you already own, or whether it needs its own app and hub. Mixing unrelated systems often means managing two sets of controls.

Product types you can expect here

  • Access control: keypads, card and fob readers, fingerprint readers and door controllers decide who is let in and can keep a record of entries.
  • Alarm sensors: door contacts, motion detectors and glass-break sensors detect an intrusion at the point it happens.
  • Sirens and panels: the panel collects signals from the sensors and triggers the siren, and many panels can also notify you or a monitoring company.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between access control and an alarm system?

Access control manages who may open a door, using a code, card, fingerprint or phone. An alarm system detects a break-in or other event and sounds a siren or sends an alert. Many properties use both: access control for daily entry and an alarm for when the building is empty.

Should I choose a wired or wireless alarm?

Wireless is usually the better choice for homes, flats and rented properties because there is no cabling to run. Wired suits new builds and larger sites where cables can be installed during construction and battery changes would be a nuisance. The right answer depends mainly on how easy it is to run cable.

Will access control work during load shedding?

Only if the lock and reader have a backup power source. Battery-powered smart locks keep working, while electric strikes and magnetic locks need a battery or UPS. It is also worth checking whether the door unlocks or stays locked when power is lost.

Can I connect an alarm to my security cameras?

Sometimes. Some alarm systems and camera recorders can trigger each other, for example recording when a motion sensor trips, but this depends on the specific models. Check the compatibility details of both before buying, or choose devices from the same system.
