DVI cables

DVI cables carry video from a computer, graphics card or docking station to a monitor or projector with a DVI port, which makes them useful for anyone running an older display or a workstation with several screens. No models are listed in this category at the moment, so the guidance below is general advice for choosing the right cable.

How to choose a DVI cable

Connector type. DVI-D carries a digital signal only, DVI-A carries analogue only, and DVI-I carries both. Check the port on your graphics card and on your monitor before ordering, because a DVI-D cable is the usual choice between two digital ports.

Single link or dual link. Single link DVI supports up to 1920 x 1200 at 60 Hz. Dual link adds extra pins and supports up to 2560 x 1600 at 60 Hz, so choose it for high resolution monitors. A dual link cable also works with single link screens, so it is the safer option if you may upgrade later.

Cable length. Keep the run as short as practical. Digital DVI signals can drop out or show sparkles on screen over long distances, especially at high resolutions. For most desks a cable of around 1.5 to 3 metres is enough, and longer runs need good shielding or an active cable.

Adapters and mixed connections. DVI-D and HDMI use compatible video signalling, so a simple DVI to HDMI cable or adapter usually works for video. DVI does not normally carry audio, so you will need a separate audio connection. Going from DVI to VGA needs a source with analogue pins (DVI-I or DVI-A), and DisplayPort usually needs an active adapter.

Build quality. Look for shielding, ferrite cores and gold-plated connectors with thumbscrews. Screws hold the plug firmly in place, which matters on a desk where cables get moved or knocked.

Brands and what to look for

There are no products in this category at present, so no brands can be named here. When models are listed, these points help you compare them:

  • Connector labelling: a clear DVI-D, DVI-I or DVI-A marking, plus a note on single or dual link, tells you what the cable will actually do.
  • Shielding: braided or foil shielding and ferrite cores reduce interference on longer runs.
  • Pin layout: a dual link plug shows a full grid of pins, while single link plugs have a gap in the grid.

DVI cable FAQ

What is the difference between DVI-D, DVI-A and DVI-I?

DVI-D is digital only, DVI-A is analogue only, and DVI-I combines both signals in one connector. A DVI-I port can feed a digital monitor or, with an adapter, a VGA monitor. DVI-D ports cannot output analogue video.

Can I use a DVI cable with an HDMI monitor?

Yes, in most cases. DVI-D and HDMI share compatible video signalling, so a DVI to HDMI cable or a small adapter will show a picture. Audio is generally not carried over DVI, so speakers need a separate connection.

Does DVI support 1440p or 4K?

Dual link DVI supports 2560 x 1600 at 60 Hz, which covers 1440p. Standard DVI does not support 4K at 60 Hz. For 4K displays, HDMI or DisplayPort is the better choice.

Is dual link DVI worth buying over single link?

It is worth it if your monitor has a resolution above 1920 x 1200 and both ports support dual link. For a standard Full HD screen, single link is enough. A dual link cable still works on a single link setup, so it covers both cases.
