IoT sensors

IoT sensors are small network-connected devices that measure temperature, humidity, motion, door and window openings, water leaks or air quality and report to a hub, router or app. They suit home owners, small offices and anyone monitoring a storeroom, cellar or server cupboard.

No models are listed in this category at the moment, so the guidance below is general. Related routers and network equipment can be found in the parent categories.

How to choose an IoT sensor

Connection standard. Wi-Fi sensors connect straight to your router and need no hub, but they use more battery and take up a connection slot on the router. Zigbee, Z-Wave and Thread sensors need a compatible hub or gateway, but they use little power and usually form a mesh that extends range. Bluetooth sensors have the shortest reach and normally need a phone or gateway nearby.

What it measures. Match the sensor to the job. Temperature and humidity sensors suit cellars and server rooms, contact sensors watch doors and windows, motion sensors cover passages, and leak sensors belong under sinks and near geysers. Multi-sensors combine several readings in one unit, which saves on batteries and wall space.

Power source. Most sensors run on a coin cell or AA batteries, and many low-power models last a year or more. Mains or USB-powered units suit sensors that report constantly. In South Africa, battery-powered sensors are useful because they keep working during load shedding, provided the hub and router are on a UPS.

Compatibility. Check that the sensor works with the hub or smart home app you already use. Sensors that support the Matter standard are designed to work across different smart home systems, which lowers the risk of buying into a closed system.

Range and placement. Brick walls, concrete and metal cabinets weaken wireless signals. A sensor in a distant garage may need a mesh repeater or a mains-powered Zigbee device nearby to stay connected.

Brands and related products

No brands are listed in this category at the moment. Until models are added, it helps to think in terms of the ecosystem a sensor belongs to:

  • Zigbee sensors: Low power use and a self-healing mesh make them common in larger homes with many devices.
  • Z-Wave sensors: They use a lower radio frequency that tends to cope well with walls, and they work only with Z-Wave hubs.
  • Wi-Fi sensors: Setup is simplest because they join the router directly, which suits a handful of devices.
  • Matter and Thread sensors: Newer devices built to work across several smart home platforms.

Routers, mesh systems and other network equipment are in the parent categories, and a router with good coverage makes any sensor setup more dependable.

IoT sensors FAQ

Do IoT sensors need a hub?

Not always. Wi-Fi sensors connect directly to your router and are controlled through an app. Zigbee, Z-Wave and Thread sensors need a hub, gateway or compatible router to link them to your network.

How long do IoT sensor batteries last?

It depends on the connection type and how often the sensor reports. Many low-power Zigbee and Z-Wave sensors run for a year or more on one battery. Wi-Fi sensors usually need new batteries sooner.

Will IoT sensors work during load shedding?

Battery-powered sensors keep measuring when the power is off. They can only send alerts if the hub, router and internet connection are also running, so a small UPS on the router and hub is worth considering.

Can IoT sensors slow down my home network?

Each sensor sends very little data, so speed is rarely affected. The more common problem is the number of devices, because some home routers struggle when dozens of Wi-Fi gadgets connect at once. Using Zigbee or Z-Wave sensors through a hub keeps most of them off your Wi-Fi.
