How to choose POS and cash register equipment
Terminal or traditional cash register. A traditional cash register suits a small business with a short product list and no need for reports beyond daily totals. A POS terminal running software is the better fit if you want stock control, several staff logins, sales reports or links to online sales.
Operating system and software. Many compact terminals run Android, while larger counter systems usually run Windows. Check which operating systems your chosen POS software supports before you buy, because this decides which hardware you can use.
Screen and touch quality. Look at screen size, how responsive the touch is and whether the surface copes with wet or greasy fingers, which matters in restaurants and food retail. A second screen facing the customer is useful if you want to show the total or take card payments there.
Printer and peripherals. Confirm that the terminal has the connections your equipment needs, such as USB, Ethernet, serial or Bluetooth, for a receipt printer, cash drawer, barcode scanner or card reader. Some terminals have a built-in thermal printer, which saves counter space but is harder to replace if it fails.
Counter space and working environment. Measure the counter before you choose between a handheld, a compact desktop unit and a full terminal with a separate monitor. Busy counters that run all day need sturdy casings and easy access to ports for servicing.
