How to choose internal PC cables
Compatibility with your machine. Branded desktops often use model-specific connectors and cable lengths, so match the part to your exact machine type rather than going by the plug alone. If the old cable is still fitted, note the part number printed on it or check the service documentation for your model.
Connector type. SATA data, SATA power, Molex, PCIe power, USB headers and front audio leads all look similar at a glance but are not interchangeable. Compare the pin count and shape at both ends, and check that the connector on the board or drive matches the one on the cable.
Length and routing. Small form factor cases leave little room, so a cable that is too long can block airflow or press against a fan. A short cable with an angled connector often fits tidier in a cramped chassis, while a tower usually allows more length.
Power capacity. A cable that feeds a graphics card or drive must suit the power supply and the load. Use the connector type the component asks for (for example 6-pin or 8-pin PCIe power), and do not use adapters to draw more than the power supply can deliver.
