Rails and mounting kits

Rails and mounting kits

Rails and mounting kits cover the slide rails, brackets, ear kits and fixing sets that hold servers, switches and network devices in a 19-inch rack. They suit IT managers, installers and anyone replacing a missing or mismatched kit. Our range of over 100 products includes kits from Cisco, Lenovo, IBM and DIGITUS.

How to choose rails and mounting kits

Match the exact model. Most rail kits are designed for a specific server or switch family, and the part number matters more than the brand name. Check the device's model or the kit's compatibility list before ordering, because a kit for one chassis often will not fit another from the same manufacturer.

Fixed or sliding rails. Fixed rails and simple brackets support a device that stays in place, which is usual for switches and routers. Sliding rails let a server be pulled out of the rack for maintenance without unmounting it, and many include a cable management arm. Servers that need regular servicing are usually better served by sliding rails.

Rack depth and hole type. Rails are adjustable only within a stated depth range, so measure the distance between the front and rear mounting posts. Racks also differ in hole type: square holes, round holes and threaded holes each need compatible fixings, and some kits are tool-less for square-hole racks only.

Weight and load. Heavy servers with several drives put real strain on rails. Check the rated load of the kit and the rack, and make sure the kit is meant for a device of that weight.

Contents of the kit. Some kits include only the rails, while others add screws, cage nuts, brackets or cable management. Read what is supplied so that you do not have to source small parts separately.

Brands we carry

  • Cisco: the largest group in our range, with rail and bracket kits for Catalyst and Nexus switches as well as UCS servers.
  • Lenovo: known for slide rail and cable management kits made for its ThinkSystem and System x servers.
  • IBM: a source of rail kits for older IBM System x and Power servers, useful when maintaining existing installations.
  • HP Enterprise: offers rack kits for ProLiant servers and for its networking products.
  • DIGITUS: a network infrastructure brand that makes universal rack accessories such as shelves, mounting sets and cable management.
  • Cambium Networks: a wireless broadband specialist, so its mounting kits are aimed at access points and radio equipment.
  • Cradlepoint: makes cellular routers and gateways, and its mounting kits fit those devices into racks or onto walls.
  • Juniper: a switching and routing manufacturer whose rack kits are made for its own network hardware.

Also in our range: ALLNET, EFB Elektronik, Extralink and Rackmount.

Frequently asked questions

What is a rail kit for a server rack?

A rail kit is a set of metal rails that attach to the sides of a server or switch and lock into the rack posts. It carries the weight of the device and holds it level. Sliding versions also let the server be pulled forward for servicing.

Can I use rails from a different brand?

Sometimes, but it is not safe to assume so. Mounting points on the chassis differ between manufacturers and often between generations of the same product line. Universal kits exist for some devices, though you should confirm that your model is supported before buying.

How do I measure my rack for rails?

Measure the distance between the inside faces of the front and rear mounting posts. Compare it with the minimum and maximum depth stated for the kit. Also note whether the holes are square, round or threaded, because this decides which fixings you need.

Do I need rails, or is a shelf enough?

A shelf is enough for light equipment that does not have mounting ears, such as a small switch or a modem. Rack servers and heavier devices should use proper rails, since these hold the weight at the chassis rather than just supporting it from below. A shelf also gives no easy way to slide a server out for maintenance.
