Card readers

Card readers

Card readers in our range include memory card readers, smart card readers and RFID badge readers. They suit photographers moving files off cameras, office staff logging in with ID cards, and IT teams rolling out secure authentication. Brands include DELOCK, RF IDEAS, ACS and ELATEC.

How to choose a card reader

Card type. Memory card readers handle SD and microSD cards from cameras, drones and phones. Smart card readers take contact chip cards such as ID, banking and health cards, and RFID or NFC readers pick up contactless badges. Settle this first, because the types are not interchangeable.

Standards and frequency. Contactless readers work on specific frequencies, commonly 125 kHz for older proximity cards and 13.56 MHz for newer ones. Multi-technology readers cover several, which helps when an office has mixed badges. For smart cards, look for PC/SC and CCID support, which many operating systems recognise without a separate driver.

Connection. Most card readers connect by USB, and both USB-A and USB-C versions exist. Check the ports on your laptop before ordering, so you do not need an adapter. Some designs sit on the desk, while others are built into a keyboard or fitted inside the PC.

Transfer speed. For memory cards, the reader's interface limits how fast files copy, however fast the card is. A fast UHS-II card in a slower reader will run below its rated speed, so match the reader to your card if you move large photo and video files. Speed hardly matters for smart card login.

Software and security. Business buyers should confirm driver support for Windows, macOS or Linux and compatibility with their authentication or print-release software. Some readers need configuring for the card technology in use, so check this with your IT team before buying in bulk.

Card readers: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a smart card reader and a memory card reader?

A memory card reader copies files from cards such as SD or microSD to a computer. A smart card reader communicates with a chip card to verify identity, sign documents or authorise payments. They read different media and use different standards, so one cannot replace the other.

Which card reader do I need for an ID or banking card?

You need a smart card reader that supports contact chip cards, usually with PC/SC and CCID compatibility. Some banking and e-government services also require a reader with a certain security class or a built-in keypad. Check the requirements of your bank or service before buying.

Do card readers need drivers?

Many USB card readers work as soon as they are plugged in, because operating systems include generic drivers for memory card readers and CCID smart card readers. Some specialised RFID and smart card readers need a manufacturer driver or configuration tool. Check the product specifications for your operating system.

Can one reader read every contactless card?

No, a reader only reads the card technologies and frequencies it supports. A basic 13.56 MHz reader will not read a 125 kHz proximity card, for example. Multi-technology readers support several card types, so they suit sites with mixed badges.
