Case buttons and switches are power, reset and control switches for PC cases, open-frame test benches and custom builds. This category suits builders who need a replacement for a broken front-panel button, a standalone switch for a bench setup, or a modding accessory. Brands in our range include DIMASTECH, LAMPTRON and IMPACTICS.
How to choose a case button or switch
Function. Decide whether you need a power button, a reset button or a combined unit. A power button starts and shuts down the system, while a reset button restarts it without cutting power. Test benches and open cases often need only a power button.
Switch type. Motherboard power and reset inputs expect a momentary switch, which makes contact only while pressed. A latching switch stays on or off and can cause odd behaviour on a front panel header, so check the product description before you buy.
Connector and cable length. Check that the wires end in connectors that fit your motherboard front panel header, or can be fitted to it. Measure the distance from the button position to the header and allow extra for cable routing. On a large case or a desk-mounted bench, a short lead will not reach.
Mounting and size. Measure the hole or bracket where the button will sit. Panel-mount buttons need a hole of a specific diameter, and the panel thickness affects whether the fixing nut will tighten properly. Self-adhesive or bench-mounted units need a flat surface and clear space around them.
Lighting. Illuminated buttons need a power source for the LED, either from the header or from a separate connector. LEDs have polarity, so confirm the wiring before you connect it.
Case button and switch brands we carry
- DIMASTECH: known for open-frame test benches and bench tables for PC hardware, so its buttons and switches suit bench builds where there is no front panel. This is the largest group in our range.
- LAMPTRON: known for fan controllers and other cooling and modding accessories, which makes its switches a natural fit for enthusiast builds with custom control panels.
Also in our range: IMPACTICS.
Frequently asked questions about case buttons and switches
How do I connect a power button to a motherboard?
Connect the two wires of a momentary button to the power switch pins on the motherboard front panel header, usually labelled PWR_SW or similar. The exact position differs between boards, so check the motherboard manual. Polarity generally does not matter for the switch itself, but it does for any LED.
Can I start a PC without a case power button?
Yes, you can start a PC by briefly touching the two power switch pins on the front panel header together with a small screwdriver. This is fine for a quick test but awkward for regular use. A separate power button wired to those pins is safer and easier.
What is the difference between a power switch and a reset switch?
A power switch turns the system on and starts a shutdown, while a reset switch forces an immediate restart. They connect to different pins on the front panel header. Many modern cases no longer include a reset button, so an add-on switch can restore it.
Do I need a separate button for a test bench?
Yes, in most cases, because an open-frame bench has no front panel with a built-in button. A standalone power button wired to the motherboard header lets you start and stop the system without touching the board. A reset button is a useful addition if you test unstable settings often.
