Bluetooth adapters

Bluetooth adapters

Bluetooth adapters add wireless connectivity to PCs and laptops that have none, or replace an older, weaker Bluetooth module. The category covers USB adapters and headset dongles from brands such as GN Jabra, Delock, ASUS and Conceptronic. They suit anyone who wants to connect headsets, keyboards, mice, controllers or speakers to a computer.

How to choose a Bluetooth adapter

Bluetooth version. Look for Bluetooth 5.0 or newer. Later versions improve range and power efficiency, and newer features such as LE Audio also need support from the operating system and the connected device. Adapters are backwards compatible, so a newer adapter still works with older headsets and mice.

Connection type. A USB adapter is the simplest option: plug it in and it works on almost any desktop or laptop with a free port. Internal cards with external antennas can give a steadier signal in a desktop case, but they need a free slot and a little more installation work.

Operating system and drivers. Check that the adapter lists support for your version of Windows, or for Linux if you use it. Many modern adapters install automatically on Windows 10 and Windows 11, but older chipsets may need a driver download.

Intended use. For music and general peripherals, any standard adapter will do. For office calls, a dongle made for a specific headset family, such as those sold with Jabra or Poly headsets, usually gives easier pairing and better call handling with softphone software.

Range class. Class 2 adapters typically cover around 10 metres in open space, which is enough for a desk. Class 1 models reach further, which helps if the PC sits under a desk or in another part of the room.

Bluetooth adapter FAQ

How do I add Bluetooth to a PC?

Plug a USB Bluetooth adapter into a free port, wait for the system to install the driver, then open the Bluetooth settings and pair your device. If the adapter comes with a driver disc or download, install that first. Desktops without built-in Bluetooth are the most common reason to buy one.

Which Bluetooth version should I buy?

Bluetooth 5.0 or newer is a sensible minimum today. It gives better range and efficiency than version 4.x, and it still connects to older Bluetooth devices. Choose a newer version if you want newer audio features, but check that your headset and operating system support them too.

Will a Bluetooth adapter work with any headset?

A standard Bluetooth adapter works with most headsets that use common profiles for calls and music. Some manufacturers also supply their own dongle for their headsets. Using that dongle can give simpler pairing and better integration with softphone software.

Can a new adapter improve a weak Bluetooth signal?

Yes, if the built-in module is old or poorly placed. Desktop PCs often have the signal blocked by the metal case, so a USB adapter on a short extension cable at desk level can help. A Class 1 adapter or an internal card with an external antenna may give a longer reach.
