PoE injectors and splitters

PoE injectors and splitters

This category covers PoE injectors, which add power to an Ethernet cable, and PoE splitters, which separate power and data again for devices that have no PoE input. It suits anyone running IP cameras, wireless access points or VoIP phones from a switch without PoE. Brands in our range include PLANET, TRENDNET, UBIQUITI and EXSYS.

How to choose a PoE injector or splitter

Injector or splitter. An injector sits next to a non-PoE switch or router and puts power onto the cable. A splitter sits at the far end and turns a PoE connection into a separate data cable and a DC plug for a device that cannot accept PoE directly. Many setups need only an injector, because most modern cameras and access points take PoE natively.

PoE standard and power budget. IEEE 802.3af, 802.3at (PoE+) and 802.3bt (PoE++) deliver progressively more power. Check the wattage your device needs, then choose an injector rated above that figure. A pan-tilt-zoom camera or a high-power outdoor radio often needs more than a basic access point does.

Network speed. Fast Ethernet models are enough for most single IP cameras. Gigabit injectors suit access points, uplinks to wireless bridges and anything that moves more than 100 Mbit/s. A Gigabit splitter is worth choosing if the device behind it has a Gigabit port.

Standard or passive PoE. Standards-based PoE negotiates power with the device before sending it. Passive PoE sends a fixed voltage all the time, which can damage equipment that does not expect it. Some wireless gear uses passive 24 V, so confirm what your device requires before connecting an injector.

Output voltage and mounting. A splitter must match the voltage your device needs, commonly 5 V, 9 V or 12 V. For a cabinet or an industrial setting, look at DIN rail or wall-mount designs and the operating temperature range. Multi-port injectors save space when several devices share one location.

PoE injector and splitter brands we carry

  • PLANET: a Taiwanese networking manufacturer with a strong industrial line, including hardened PoE injectors and switches.
  • TRENDNET: known for home and small business networking equipment, including straightforward single-port injectors.
  • UBIQUITI: maker of the UniFi and airMAX wireless families, whose access points and radios are often powered over Ethernet.
  • MikroTik: the Latvian company behind RouterOS, with routers and wireless products that often accept PoE input.
  • EXSYS: a German brand best known for expansion cards and adapters for serial, USB and network connections.
  • INTELLINET, ROLINE and DIGITUS: brands focused on network cabling and accessories, which suit extending an existing installation.

Also in our range: LevelOne, ALLNET, INLINE and LogiLink.

PoE injectors and splitters: frequently asked questions

Do I need a PoE injector if my switch has no PoE?

Yes, unless the device has its own power supply nearby. An injector adds power to the Ethernet cable between the switch and the device. This removes the need for a mains socket at the camera or access point.

What does a PoE splitter do?

A PoE splitter takes a PoE cable and separates it into a data connection and a DC power output. It lets you power a device without PoE support from a PoE source. Check that the splitter's output voltage matches what the device requires.

How far can a PoE injector send power?

The Ethernet standard limits a copper cable run to 100 metres, and PoE follows the same limit. Cable quality matters, as poor or copper-clad aluminium cable loses more power over distance. For longer runs, a PoE extender or a switch partway along the route is the usual solution.

Can I use any PoE injector with any device?

Not always. Standards-based injectors work with devices that follow the same IEEE standard, and the injector must supply at least the power the device needs. Passive PoE devices need an injector with the matching fixed voltage, so check the specifications on both sides first.
