USB network adapters

USB network adapters

USB network adapters add a wired Ethernet port to laptops, ultrabooks and mini PCs that have no RJ-45 socket, or replace one that has failed. Our range of over 30 models includes USB-A and USB Type-C adapters in Gigabit and 2.5 Gigabit versions from StarTech.com, AXAGON, TP-Link and Lanberg.

How to choose a USB network adapter

Network speed. Most adapters in our range support 10/100/1000 Mbit/s, which is enough for typical broadband, file sharing and video calls. A smaller group supports 2.5 Gbit/s, which only pays off if your router or switch also has a 2.5 Gigabit port. A few older models stop at 100 Mbit/s, so check the Ethernet data rates before ordering.

Connector type. Check which port your computer has free. Many adapters use a standard USB-A plug, while others have USB Type-C for newer laptops and tablets. If your device has only Type-C ports, choose a Type-C adapter rather than relying on a second adapter in between.

USB version. A Gigabit or 2.5 Gigabit connection needs a USB 3.2 Gen 1 (also called USB 3.1 Gen 1) port to run at full speed. Several adapters in our range are listed as USB 2.0/3.2 Gen 1, so they work in older ports, but a USB 2.0 port limits the speed well below one gigabit. The 5000 Mbit/s figure shown for many models describes the USB link, not the network speed.

Chipset and drivers. The chipset decides how easily the adapter works with your operating system. Realtek RTL8153 is the most frequent in our range, with ASIX AX88179 as another gigabit option and Realtek RTL8156B used in 2.5 Gigabit models. If you run Linux, macOS or an older Windows version, check that the manufacturer lists driver support for your system.

Indicators and certification. Link and activity LEDs make it easier to see whether the cable is connected and traffic is flowing, which helps when troubleshooting. Models in our range carry CE and RoHS marks, which is worth checking if you buy for an office or school.

Frequently asked questions about USB network adapters

Do I need to install drivers for a USB network adapter?

Often not, because current versions of Windows, macOS and Linux include drivers for common chipsets such as Realtek RTL8153 and ASIX AX88179. Some adapters still need a driver from the manufacturer, especially on older systems. Check the chipset in the specifications and compare it with your operating system.

Will a USB network adapter be as fast as a built-in Ethernet port?

A Gigabit adapter in a USB 3.2 Gen 1 port comes close to the speed of a built-in gigabit port for everyday use. In a USB 2.0 port the connection is capped well below one gigabit. The speed also depends on your router, cable and internet plan.

What is the difference between USB-A and USB Type-C network adapters?

The difference is the plug on the adapter, which must match a free port on your device. USB-A suits desktops and many older laptops, while USB Type-C suits slim laptops and tablets. Speed depends on the USB version and chipset, not on the plug shape alone.

Is a 2.5 Gigabit USB network adapter worth it?

It is worth it only if the other end of the connection also supports 2.5 Gbit/s, such as a router or switch with a 2.5 Gigabit port. It can also help when you move large files across a fast local network. With a standard gigabit router, a Gigabit adapter gives the same real-world speed.
