Sound cards

Sound cards

Sound cards in our range include USB audio adapters, external audio interfaces for recording and internal expansion cards for desktop PCs. They suit gamers wanting better headphone output, musicians and streamers who need clean inputs, and anyone replacing a faulty audio port. Brands include Lenovo, Focusrite, Creative and Behringer, with over 100 models.

How to choose a sound card

Purpose. Decide first whether you need playback, recording or both. A simple USB adapter restores headphone and microphone sockets on a laptop or mini PC, while an audio interface is built for plugging in microphones and instruments. Internal cards mainly appeal to desktop gamers and listeners who want a dedicated headphone output.

Inputs and outputs. Count what you actually need to connect. A podcaster may need one microphone input, a singer-songwriter two combo inputs for voice and guitar, and a band recording live many more. Check for XLR or jack inputs, 48V phantom power for condenser microphones, and monitor outputs if you use studio speakers.

Connection type. USB models work with laptops and desktops without opening the case and can be moved between computers. Internal cards use a PCI Express slot, so check that your motherboard has a free one and that your case can fit the card. Thunderbolt and USB-C interfaces exist at the professional end, so confirm which ports your computer has.

Audio quality and latency. Higher sample rates and bit depths, such as 24-bit recording, give more headroom for music production, but they matter less for everyday listening. For recording, low latency and good drivers count for more than headline figures. Look for direct monitoring if you want to hear yourself without delay.

Software compatibility. Check that the device supports your operating system, such as Windows 11 or macOS, and works with your recording software. Class-compliant devices usually work without extra drivers, while professional interfaces often come with their own control software.

Sound cards FAQ

Do I need a sound card for my PC?

Most people do not, because motherboards include built-in audio that handles everyday listening and calls. A sound card helps if you hear interference, need better headphone output, or want to record with professional microphones. It also helps if your onboard audio has failed.

What is the difference between a sound card and an audio interface?

An audio interface is a type of external sound card designed for recording. It usually has microphone preamps, instrument inputs and monitor outputs. A basic sound card or USB adapter mainly provides headphone and microphone sockets for general use.

Can I use a USB sound card with a laptop?

Yes, a USB sound card works with any laptop that has a suitable USB port and a supported operating system. It bypasses the laptop's built-in audio, which can improve headphone output or add inputs. Most simple adapters work as soon as they are plugged in.

Which sound card is best for recording music?

An audio interface with the number of inputs you need, phantom power and low-latency drivers is the best choice for recording. Single-microphone setups need only two inputs, while recording a band needs more. Focusrite, Behringer, MOTU and Solid State Logic interfaces are among the options in our range.
