Fibre optic cables

Fibre optic cables

Fibre optic cables connect switches, servers, routers, media converters and patch panels in offices, server rooms and larger home networks. Our range covers fibre patch cables and related cabling from brands such as EFB Elektronik, Digitus, Ubiquiti and Delock.

How to choose a fibre optic cable

Single-mode or multimode. Single-mode fibre (OS2) carries a signal over many kilometres and suits links between buildings or long runs. Multimode fibre (OM1 to OM5) is intended for shorter links inside a building or data room. The cable must match the transceivers at both ends, so check the module type first.

Fibre grade. For multimode, OM3 and OM4 are the usual choices for 10 Gbit/s links, and OM4 supports a longer distance than OM3. OM1 and OM2 mainly turn up in older installations. If you are extending existing cabling, match the grade already in place.

Connector type. LC is the small connector found on most modern switches and SFP modules. SC is larger and still common on patch panels and older equipment. Many cables have a different connector at each end, which is useful when linking new hardware to an older panel.

Length and construction. Measure the real route including bends, and add a little slack, because fibre should not be pulled tight or folded sharply. Duplex cables carry separate transmit and receive fibres and suit most network links. For routes through walls or shared spaces, look for a low-smoke, halogen-free jacket (LSZH).

Compatibility with your hardware. Some vendors, Ubiquiti and Dell among them, sell cables to go with their own switches and optics. Third-party cables normally work when the fibre type, wavelength and connectors are right, but check the equipment manual if you are unsure.

Fibre optic cable brands we carry

  • EFB Elektronik: a German supplier of network and connectivity cabling, and the largest brand in this category in our range.
  • Digitus: the house brand of ASSMANN Electronic, known for structured cabling, patch cables and network accessories.
  • Ubiquiti: the maker of the UniFi network range, so its fibre cables are a natural match for its switches and optical modules.
  • Delock: known for adapters, interface cables and connectivity accessories for computers and networks.
  • StarTech.com: a supplier of connectivity products aimed at IT professionals and installers.
  • Dell: a hardware maker whose cables are designed to pair with its own servers and network equipment.

Also in our range: Good Connections, Synergy 21, A-LAN, Alogic, Roline and Inline.

Fibre optic cables: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between single-mode and multimode fibre cable?

Single-mode fibre has a very thin core and carries light over long distances, often tens of kilometres with suitable optics. Multimode fibre has a wider core and is used for shorter links, typically within a building or campus. The two types are not interchangeable, so the cable must match the transceivers on both ends.

Should I buy OM3 or OM4 cable?

OM4 is the better choice if you want a longer reach at high speeds or some room for future upgrades. For 10 Gbit/s links, OM3 is usually rated up to about 300 metres and OM4 up to about 400 metres. For short runs in a rack or small office, either grade will do the job.

Is an LC or SC connector better?

Neither is better in performance terms, so choose the one your equipment uses. LC is smaller and is used on most current SFP and SFP+ modules. SC is larger and is often found on patch panels and older network devices.

How long can a fibre optic cable be?

The maximum length depends on the fibre type, the speed and the transceivers used. A multimode link at 10 Gbit/s typically reaches a few hundred metres, while single-mode links with suitable optics can reach 10 kilometres or more. The cable itself can be made longer, but the optics set the limit for a working connection.
