FireWire cables connect cameras, audio interfaces, external drives and computers that use IEEE 1394 ports. Our range has over 80 models, so you can match the connector and length to older video, studio or storage equipment. Leading brands include Delock, InLine, EXSYS and S-CONN.
How to choose a FireWire cable
Standard and speed. FireWire 400 (IEEE 1394a) runs at up to 400 Mbit/s, while FireWire 800 (IEEE 1394b) runs at up to 800 Mbit/s. Check which standard each device supports, because the cable only moves data as fast as the slowest device allows.
Connector types. FireWire 400 uses a 6-pin or a smaller 4-pin plug, and FireWire 800 uses a 9-pin plug. Many camcorders have the 4-pin socket, whereas most desktop ports are 6-pin or 9-pin. Read the connector at each end of the cable listing before ordering.
Power delivery. The 6-pin and 9-pin connectors can carry power, so a bus-powered external drive or audio interface may run from the cable alone. The 4-pin plug carries data only, so a device that needs bus power will not work through a cable or adapter that ends in a 4-pin plug on the host side.
Length. Choose the shortest cable that reaches comfortably. FireWire 400 cables are generally limited to about 4.5 m between two devices, and longer runs can cause dropouts during video capture or recording. If you need more reach, a repeater or a hub in the chain is a safer solution than one very long lead.
Build quality. Look for shielded cables with firmly fitting, well-moulded plugs. A loose connector is a common cause of dropped frames when capturing from a camcorder or recording audio.
FireWire cable brands in our range
- Delock: a German connectivity brand that covers a very large number of cable, adapter and interface types, which helps when you need an unusual connector combination.
- InLine: a German brand known for computer cables and adapters, including many standard leads for everyday workshop and office use.
- EXSYS: known mainly for interface and expansion cards, so it is a useful name when a computer has no FireWire port and you need to add one alongside the cable.
Also in our range: S-CONN, shiverpeaks, Roline, Good Connections and ACT.
FireWire cables: frequently asked questions
Is FireWire the same as IEEE 1394?
Yes, FireWire is Apple's name for the IEEE 1394 interface standard. Sony called it i.LINK and some other makers used the name DV. A cable sold under any of these names uses the same type of connection, but you still need to check the connector shape.
Can I connect a FireWire 800 device to a FireWire 400 port?
Yes, as long as you use a cable or adapter with the right connector on each end, such as 9-pin to 6-pin. The connection will work at FireWire 400 speed. Bus power also depends on the ports, so check that the device does not need more power than the port provides.
Which FireWire cable do I need for a DV camcorder?
Most DV camcorders need a cable with a 4-pin plug at the camera end. The computer end is usually a 6-pin plug, though some computers use a 9-pin socket. Check the socket on both devices before you buy.
How long can a FireWire cable be?
A FireWire 400 cable can usually be up to about 4.5 m between two devices. Beyond that, the signal can weaken and cause unstable transfers. Daisy-chaining devices or adding a hub can extend the total distance without using one long lead.
