SAS and NVMe cables connect internal storage to controllers, backplanes and motherboards. They suit PC builders, server administrators and anyone replacing a missing cable. Our range of over 100 models covers SATA, eSATA and mini-SAS style cables, mainly from StarTech.com, Kolink, InLine and Microchip Technology, plus some server-specific options.
How to choose a SAS or NVMe cable
Connector type. Match the plug on both ends to your hardware before anything else. In our range, the most common ends are SATA 7-pin, followed by SFF-8087, SFF-8088, eSATA and SFF-8643. SFF-8087 and SFF-8643 are internal mini-SAS connectors for controller cards and backplanes, while SFF-8088 is the external version.
Connector gender and direction. Check whether you need male to male, female to female or male to female. Many cables here are male to male, which is the usual choice for linking a controller or motherboard port to a drive. Female ends are normally for extensions and adapters.
Cable length. Measure the path inside the case, not the straight distance between the two ports. Lengths in our range start at around 15 cm and go up to 1 m. Short cables keep a small build tidy, but a cable that is too tight strains the connector and can restrict airflow.
Compatibility with your controller or server. Check the port on the controller card, backplane or server board, and whether the manufacturer specifies its own cable. Branded servers from vendors such as Lenovo and HP Enterprise sometimes use cables with specific part numbers, so match the model number where one is given.
Brands we carry
- StarTech.com: a specialist in connectivity products, with a large selection of drive cables, adapters and converters for PCs and servers.
- Kolink: a PC hardware brand best known for cases and power supplies, with cables sold for internal builds.
- InLine: a German brand focused on cables and connection accessories for computers and office equipment.
- Microchip Technology, Microchip and LSI: makers of RAID controllers and host bus adapters, so their cables are designed to pair with those cards.
- Supermicro, Intel, Lenovo and HP Enterprise: server and workstation manufacturers, whose cables are intended for their own boards, backplanes and chassis.
Also in our range: Akasa and some unbranded cables.
Frequently asked questions
What is an SFF-8643 cable used for?
An SFF-8643 cable carries data over an internal mini-SAS HD connection. It is typically used between a RAID controller or host bus adapter and a drive backplane or drives. Check the connector on the other end, as it may be SFF-8643 again or a set of individual SATA or SAS plugs.
What is the difference between SFF-8087 and SFF-8088?
SFF-8087 is an internal mini-SAS connector, while SFF-8088 is an external one. SFF-8087 connects inside the case, for example from a controller card to a backplane. SFF-8088 is used to link external storage enclosures to a controller.
Can I connect a SATA drive to a SAS controller?
In most cases, yes. SAS controllers are generally designed to work with SATA drives as well. The reverse does not apply: a SATA-only controller cannot run a SAS drive, so check the controller specification first.
What length of internal cable do I need?
Choose a length that covers the route inside your case with a little slack. For a small build with the drive close to the port, a cable of around 30 cm may be enough. Larger cases and servers with distant drive bays often need 50 cm to 1 m.
