Power cables

Power cables

Power cables for computers and electronics: IEC power cords, internal PC power cables, mains extension cords, DC power cables and power plug adapters. The range suits home users replacing a missing lead, IT teams equipping offices and anyone building or upgrading a PC. Brands include INLINE, ACT, Microconnect, Delock and Bachmann.

How to choose a power cable

Connector type. Check the socket on the device before anything else. Desktop PCs, monitors and many printers use a C13 or C14 connection, while small adapters and some laptop power bricks use C5 (cloverleaf) or C7 (figure of eight). If you are unsure, look at the inlet on the equipment or read its label.

Plug standard. Many cables from European suppliers end in a Schuko plug (type F), which does not fit South African wall sockets without an adapter. Choose a cable with the correct mains plug for your sockets, or add a power plug adapter, and check the adapter is rated for the load of the device.

Length and rating. Pick a length that reaches the wall without tension, but avoid a much longer cable than you need, since excess cable is clutter. Look at the current rating (commonly 10 A or 16 A) and the conductor thickness, and make sure they cover the device. Servers, workstations and extension cords feeding several devices need more headroom than a monitor.

Internal or external use. Internal PC power cables must match the power supply and the component: ATX motherboard, CPU, PCIe graphics card or SATA drive connectors are not interchangeable between every power supply brand. Use the cables supplied with a modular power supply where possible. For external cables, a mains extension cord or an IEC cord is the usual choice.

Colour. Black is the most listed colour in our range, with white also available, and a few cables come in red, blue, yellow or multicolour. Colour does not change how a cable performs, but it helps in racks and patch areas where you want to tell circuits or devices apart.

Power cable brands we carry

  • INLINE: a German brand offering a large selection of computer cables and accessories, and the biggest name in this category by number of models.
  • Microconnect: a connectivity brand with cables for IT, audio and video use, including power cords for office equipment.
  • Delock: a German brand known for adapters, interface cables and connectivity accessories for computers.
  • Bachmann: an Austrian maker of mains power distribution products such as extension sockets and cord sets.
  • Lenovo: power cords and cables intended for its own laptops, desktops, workstations and servers.
  • AS Schwabe: a German manufacturer of mains products including extension leads, plugs and sockets.
  • Roline: a cable brand aimed at IT installations, with a range of network, video and power cables.

Also in our range: ACT, Wentronic, Sygonix and Good Connections.

Among the subcategories, IEC power cords form the largest group. Internal PC power cables and mains extension cords follow, with smaller selections of DC power cables and power plug adapters.

Power cable FAQ

Which power cable does my PC need?

Most desktop PCs use a standard IEC C13 power cord, the same type found on many monitors and printers. Check the inlet on the power supply at the back of the case, which has three pins in a rectangular shape. Then choose a cable with the correct plug for your wall socket.

What is the difference between C13 and C5 power cables?

The connectors have different shapes and are not interchangeable. C13 is the larger three-pin connector used on PCs, monitors and servers. C5, often called cloverleaf, is smaller and is common on laptop power adapters and small devices.

Can I use a longer power cable than the original?

Yes, provided the cable has the correct connector and a rating that covers the device. Longer cables lose slightly more power, so a thicker conductor is better for high-draw equipment such as workstations. Keep the cable uncoiled when it carries a heavy load, since coiled cables can heat up.

Do I need a plug adapter for a European power cord?

Yes, a cord with a Schuko or other European plug usually needs an adapter for South African sockets, unless the cable already ends in the local plug type. Choose an adapter that fits both the plug and the load of the device. Where possible, buying a cord with the correct plug avoids the extra connection.
