USB A/B cables connect a computer or hub (USB A) to a device with a different port, most often a printer or scanner (USB B), but also Micro-USB B, Mini-USB B and USB C devices. Our range covers standard A to B leads, extensions and USB 3.x versions from brands such as LINDY, StarTech.com, Micro Connect and InLine.
How to choose a USB A/B cable
Connector type. Check the plug on the device end before ordering. The standard square USB B plug is used by printers, scanners and docking stations. Micro-USB B and Mini-USB B are common on older external drives, cameras and small peripherals, and all of these types are in our range.
USB version and speed. USB 2.0 cables run at 480 Mbit/s, which is enough for printers, keyboards and most audio interfaces. USB 3.2 Gen 1 cables reach 5 Gbit/s and suit external drives and docks. A few cables in our range support USB 3.2 Gen 2 at 10 Gbit/s. A USB 3.x B plug is wider than a USB 2.0 one and will not fit a USB 2.0 B socket, so check the port first.
Length. Choose the shortest cable that reaches comfortably. USB 2.0 is specified for runs of up to 5 metres, and faster USB 3.x cables tend to lose reliability over long distances. For longer runs, look for an active or extender cable rather than a plain lead.
Male or female ends. Most cables have a male plug at both ends. Some in our range have a female connector for extending an existing cable or fitting a panel, so confirm the gender at each end if you are not simply linking a computer to a peripheral.
Build and colour. Shielding, gold-plated contacts and moulded strain relief matter more than looks in a cable that is moved often. Black is the most common colour, with grey, white, transparent and some coloured options available if you want to tell cables apart.

USB A/B cable FAQ
What is a USB A/B cable used for?
A USB A/B cable links a computer to a peripheral that has a USB B socket. Printers, scanners, external hard drive enclosures, docking stations and audio interfaces commonly use this connection. The A end plugs into the computer and the B end into the device.
Can I use a USB 3.0 A/B cable on a USB 2.0 device?
Yes, in most cases, if the plug physically fits. A USB 3.x B plug is wider than a USB 2.0 B plug, so it will not fit a USB 2.0 B socket. A USB 2.0 B plug does fit a USB 3.x B socket and runs at USB 2.0 speed.
How long can a USB A/B cable be?
A passive USB 2.0 cable should not exceed 5 metres under the specification. USB 3.x cables are generally best kept shorter, as signal quality drops over distance. For longer connections, use an active cable or a powered extender.
What is the difference between USB A to B and USB A to Micro-B?
The difference is the plug on the device end. USB B is the large, squarish connector found on printers and docks, while Micro-USB B is a small, flat connector found on portable drives and older small devices. Both connect to a standard USB A port on the computer, so choose by the socket on the device.
