USB-C cables

USB-C cables

USB-C cables for charging phones, tablets and laptops, connecting external drives and docks, and sending video to monitors. Our range of over 500 models covers USB-C to USB-C, USB-C to USB-A and a few USB-B, Micro-USB and video-output versions, from brands including StarTech.com, Belkin, Lindy and CableMod.

How to choose a USB-C cable

Connectors. Check both ends before anything else. USB-C to USB-C is the most common type in our range, followed by USB-C to USB-A for older chargers, computers and hubs. There are also smaller groups with USB-B (often for printers and docking equipment), Micro-USB B, and a few with HDMI or DisplayPort at one end.

Data speed. The USB version decides how fast files move. USB 2.0 cables, which top out at 480 Mbit/s, are fine for charging and for keyboards or phones syncing photos. For external SSDs and docks, look for USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5 Gbit/s) or Gen 2 (10 Gbit/s). Gen 2x2 cables reach 20 Gbit/s, and a few USB4 cables are available for the fastest transfers.

Charging power. A cable that fits is not always able to carry enough power. Laptops usually need a cable rated for higher wattage than a phone does, so check the power rating in the product specification and match it to your charger and device.

Video output. If you want to connect a monitor, choose a cable designed for video, such as USB-C to HDMI or DisplayPort, or a full-featured USB-C to USB-C cable. Your laptop or phone port must also support video output, which a standard data-only cable cannot add.

Length and jacket. Short cables suit desks and power banks, while longer ones are handy for sofas and wall sockets. Very long cables can limit the speed of some high-speed versions. Jackets in our range are mostly PVC or TPE, with nylon braiding on some and recycled PVC on others. Braided nylon usually resists fraying better at the connector.

USB-C cables FAQ

Can any USB-C cable charge a laptop?

No, not every USB-C cable can charge a laptop properly. Many cables are built for phones and carry less power than a laptop needs, so charging may be slow or may not start. Check that the cable's power rating matches your laptop charger.

What is the difference between USB 2.0 and USB 3.2 USB-C cables?

The main difference is data speed. USB 2.0 cables transfer data at up to 480 Mbit/s, while USB 3.2 cables reach 5, 10 or 20 Gbit/s depending on the version. For charging alone, a USB 2.0 cable is often enough, but external SSDs and docks benefit from a USB 3.2 cable.

Can I connect a monitor with a USB-C cable?

Yes, if both your device and the cable support video output. You can use a USB-C to HDMI or DisplayPort cable, or a suitable USB-C to USB-C cable with a monitor that has a USB-C input. A cable designed only for charging and basic data will not send a picture.

Does the length of a USB-C cable affect speed?

It can, mainly with high-speed cables. Short cables of around one metre or less are the safest choice for 10 Gbit/s and faster connections. Longer cables are fine for charging and slower data, but signal quality may drop at the highest speeds.
