Wires, cables

Wires and cables for computers and electronics: USB and Thunderbolt cables, power leads, audio and video cables, network cables, adapters, internal PC cables and fibre optic leads. The range suits home users, offices and IT installers. Leading brands include Delock, InLine, StarTech.com and DIGITUS.

With over 21,000 products, it helps to know which connector and standard you need before you search.

How to choose wires and cables

Connector and standard. Check the connector on both ends first, for example USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, DisplayPort, RJ45 or a C13 power connector. Then check the standard, because a USB 2.0 cable and a USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt cable can look almost the same but carry data at very different speeds.

Cable or adapter. A single cable with the right connectors on each end usually gives a cleaner and more stable connection than a cable plus an adapter. Adapters and converters make sense when the ports genuinely differ, such as DisplayPort to HDMI or USB-C to Ethernet, and some of them need active electronics to convert the signal.

Length. Buy the shortest length that reaches comfortably without strain. High-speed signals such as 4K video, Thunderbolt and 10 Gbit/s Ethernet lose quality over distance, so long runs may need a higher-grade or active cable, or fibre optic.

Network cable category and shielding. For Ethernet, Cat6 and Cat6A suit most homes and offices, while Cat6A and higher are common for 10 Gbit/s links and longer installations. Shielded cables help where network cables run beside mains wiring or in busy server rooms. Fibre optic cables and SFP modules are for long distances or fast links between switches and servers.

Power plug type. Power cables differ by plug and by the connector at the device end. Check whether your equipment needs a C5, C7, C13 or C19 connector, and whether the wall plug matches your sockets.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a USB-C cable and a Thunderbolt cable?

USB-C describes the connector shape, while Thunderbolt is a faster standard that uses the same connector. A basic USB-C cable may only handle slow data and low charging power. A Thunderbolt cable is built for high-speed data, multiple displays and fast external storage, so choose it when you connect docks or monitors.

Which network cable should I buy for home or office use?

Cat6 is enough for most home and office networks, and Cat6A is a better choice if you want 10 Gbit/s over longer runs. Use a shielded cable in places with a lot of electrical interference. Always match the cable category to your router, switch and wall points.

Do I need an adapter or a different cable?

A direct cable is usually better when one exists for your two devices, for example HDMI to HDMI. An adapter is needed when the ports are different types, such as USB-C to HDMI or DisplayPort to VGA. Check whether your port supports video output before buying, as not every USB-C port does.

Does cable length affect signal quality?

Yes, longer cables can weaken or drop high-speed signals, especially for 4K video, fast USB and Thunderbolt. Buy only the length you need. For long distances, look at active cables, network extenders or fibre optic cables, which handle distance better than standard copper.
