Accessories

This category covers computer accessories: cables and wires, network cards and adapters, docking stations and USB hubs, card readers, sound cards, case extras, RGB lighting and maintenance tools. It suits anyone who needs to connect, extend or tidy up a PC or laptop setup. Leading brands in our range include DELOCK, InLine, Shiverpeaks and StarTech.com.

How to choose computer accessories

Connector type and standard. Check both ends of the connection before anything else. HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-A, USB-C, SATA, RJ45 and power connectors are not interchangeable, and a cable that fits physically may still not carry the signal you need. For video, look at the supported resolution and refresh rate, not just the plug.

Cable length and build. Measure the route the cable will take, then add some slack for bends. Longer runs can lose signal quality, especially with high-resolution video or fast USB data, so choose a cable rated for the speed you need. For network cabling, the category rating (such as Cat 6 or Cat 6a) and shielding matter more than the colour or jacket.

Compatibility with your hardware. Network cards and sound cards need a free slot of the right type, usually PCIe, and enough space in the case. Card readers should list the card formats you actually use, such as SD or microSD. Before buying a dock or adapter, confirm that your laptop port supports video output and charging over USB-C, because not every USB-C port does.

Ports and power on docks and hubs. Count the ports you use daily, then add a few spare. Docking stations that charge a laptop must supply enough wattage for that model, and a hub that powers external drives usually needs its own power supply rather than drawing everything from the laptop.

Frequently asked questions about computer accessories

What is the difference between a USB hub and a docking station?

A USB hub adds extra USB ports, while a docking station usually adds several kinds of connection at once. Docks often include video outputs, Ethernet, card readers and charging for the laptop. If you only need more USB ports, a hub is enough. If you want a one-cable desk setup with monitors, a dock is the better fit.

Will any HDMI or DisplayPort cable work with my monitor?

Not always. The cable must support the resolution and refresh rate of your monitor, for example 4K at 60 Hz. Older or low-grade cables may only manage lower settings. Check the cable specification, and make sure your graphics output and monitor support the same standard.

Do I need a network card if my PC already has Ethernet?

Usually not, unless you need something the built-in port lacks. A separate network card or adapter makes sense when the onboard port is faulty, when you need a faster port, or when you want a second connection. Many laptops without an Ethernet port can use a USB network adapter instead.

How do I know which cable length to buy?

Measure the actual path from device to device and add around 10 to 20 per cent for bends and movement. A cable that is slightly too long is easier to manage than one that is too short. For high-speed video or USB, avoid unnecessarily long cables, because signal quality can drop over distance.
