How to choose a 120 mm fan

It refers to the fan's frame size, which is about 12 cm across. Screw holes are spaced 105 mm apart, so any standard 120 mm fan fits a 120 mm mount. Always check the frame depth and clearance, as some fans are thicker than the usual 25 mm.
Should I buy a PWM or a 3-pin fan?
A 4-pin PWM fan is the better choice for most builds because it changes speed smoothly and can idle quietly. A 3-pin fan still works on most motherboards, but speed is controlled by voltage, so the range is narrower. If your motherboard has only 3-pin headers, a 4-pin fan will still run, usually at a set speed.
