How to choose thermal paste and pads
Paste or pad. Paste is spread in a thin layer between a processor and its cooler, filling the microscopic gaps in the metal. Pads are solid sheets cut to size, and they suit larger or uneven gaps such as those over graphics card memory chips and voltage regulators.
Thermal conductivity. This is usually quoted in W/mK, and a higher figure means the material passes heat on more readily. Use it to compare products from the same maker. Mounting pressure and how evenly you apply the material also affect real temperatures.
Electrical conductivity. Many standard pastes are non-conductive, but some high-performance compounds, liquid metal in particular, can carry current and cause a short circuit if they spill onto the board. Liquid metal also reacts with aluminium, so it should only be used on suitable surfaces such as copper or nickel-plated ones. Read the product description before buying.
Pad thickness. Pads come in different thicknesses, measured in millimetres, and the thickness has to match the gap between the chip and the heatsink. A pad that is too thin leaves an air gap, while one that is too thick lifts the cooler and weakens contact pressure.
Amount supplied. A small syringe is enough for one or two CPU applications. If you rebuild PCs often or maintain several machines, a larger pack saves you reordering.

How often should I replace thermal paste?
Replace thermal paste whenever you remove the cooler, and otherwise every few years if temperatures start to creep up. Over time paste can dry out or shift, which reduces how well it transfers heat. A fresh application is also sensible when you move a cooler to a new processor.
Is thermal paste or a thermal pad better for a CPU?
Thermal paste is the usual choice for a CPU. The processor's lid and the cooler base are flat and close together, so a very thin layer of paste gives the smallest thermal barrier. Pads are better where the gap is wider, as with memory chips on a graphics card.
How much thermal paste should I use?
A pea-sized amount in the centre of the processor is enough for most mainstream CPUs. Larger processors may need a thin line or a few small dots, depending on the manufacturer's advice. Too much paste squeezes out of the sides and does not improve cooling.
Can I use thermal paste on a graphics card?
Yes, thermal paste is normally used on the graphics processor itself, while the memory chips and power components often use thermal pads. Measure or check the pad thickness before ordering, because the wrong size can leave poor contact. It is also worth checking the card's warranty terms before removing the cooler.
