Gaming and desktop graphics cards

Gaming and desktop graphics cards

Gaming and desktop graphics cards for PC builders and upgraders, covering Nvidia GeForce and AMD Radeon models in over 400 variants. Brands include GIGABYTE, ASUS, ZOTAC, INNO3D and MSI. They suit anyone who wants higher frame rates in games, faster video editing and 3D rendering, or a replacement for an ageing card.

How to choose a graphics card

Resolution and games. Decide what you play and at what resolution first. A card that handles 1080p comfortably may struggle at 1440p or 4K with demanding titles, while esports games run well on far more modest hardware.

Video memory. VRAM matters most at higher resolutions and with high-quality textures. For modern 1080p gaming, 8 GB is a workable minimum, 12 GB or more gives headroom at 1440p, and 16 GB or more suits 4K and heavy creative work.

Nvidia or AMD. Nvidia GeForce cards offer DLSS upscaling and strong ray tracing, and are widely used for CUDA-based rendering and AI tools. AMD Radeon cards offer FSR upscaling and are often chosen for raw gaming performance per rand spent. Compare the specific models rather than the brand alone.

Size and power. Check the card length, thickness (many occupy two to four slots) and the power connectors it needs against your case and power supply. The manufacturer's recommended PSU wattage is a safer guide than the card's own consumption figure.

Cooling and noise. Dual-fan cards are shorter and cheaper, while triple-fan designs usually run cooler and quieter under load. If your case has limited airflow, a better cooler is worth prioritising.

Graphics card FAQ

How much VRAM do I need for gaming?

For 1080p gaming, 8 GB is generally enough, though some recent games benefit from more. At 1440p, 12 GB or more is a safer target. For 4K gaming or heavy video and 3D work, choose 16 GB or above.

Will a graphics card fit my PC case?

It will fit if the card length, thickness and height are within your case limits. Case makers publish a maximum GPU length, and card listings give the dimensions. Also check that you have enough free expansion slots, as many gaming cards cover two to four.

Do I need a new power supply for a new graphics card?

Not always, but you should check. Each card has a recommended PSU wattage and specific power connectors, usually 8-pin or 12VHPWR. If your supply is older, lacks those connectors or falls below the recommended wattage, an upgrade is advisable.

Should I buy an Nvidia or an AMD graphics card?

Either works well for gaming, so compare individual models at your target resolution. Nvidia is the usual pick if you want DLSS or use CUDA-based creative and AI software. AMD Radeon cards are worth considering if you want strong gaming performance and generous VRAM for the money.
