DDR4 memory

DDR4 memory

DDR4 memory in our range covers desktop and laptop modules, server memory and multi-module kits, from 4 GB sticks up to 128 GB modules, with over 500 models listed. It suits anyone upgrading or repairing a PC, laptop or server that uses DDR4. Brands include DELL, G.SKILL, Patriot Memory and Kingston.

How to choose DDR4 memory

Form factor. Desktops and servers use full-size 288-pin DIMM modules, while laptops and some compact PCs use shorter 260-pin SO-DIMM modules. The two are not interchangeable, so check which one your device takes. Most of the modules in our range are DIMMs, with a smaller selection of SO-DIMMs for laptops.

Capacity and kit layout. Single 8 GB and 16 GB modules are the most common sizes in our range, with 4 GB, 32 GB and a few 64 GB and 128 GB options as well. A kit of two matched modules, such as 2 x 8 GB, lets a compatible system run in dual-channel mode, which usually improves memory bandwidth. A single module is simpler if you are adding to an existing stick or have only one free slot.

Speed and latency. Listed speeds run from 2133 MHz to 3200 MHz, and 2666 MHz and 3200 MHz are the most frequent. Your processor and motherboard set the speed the memory can actually run at, so a faster module may be limited to a lower speed. CAS latency in our range runs from 15 to 22, and a lower number at the same speed means slightly quicker response.

ECC and registered memory. ECC modules detect and correct single-bit errors, which matters in servers, workstations and NAS devices. Most desktop PCs and laptops use non-ECC memory and do not support ECC at all. Registered modules (RDIMM) are for servers whose manufacturer specifies them, so match the exact type in your server documentation.

Platform compatibility. DDR4 does not fit DDR3 or DDR5 slots, and the notch is positioned differently on purpose. For branded PCs and servers, check the manufacturer's memory list or part number before buying.

DDR4 memory brands we carry

  • DELL: a major PC and server manufacturer whose memory modules are made to suit its own desktops, workstations and servers.
  • HP Enterprise: supplies memory for its ProLiant servers and other business hardware, where matching the original specification matters.
  • G.SKILL: well known for enthusiast kits with tuned speeds and latencies, aimed at gaming and overclocking builds.
  • Patriot Memory: known for its Viper gaming memory as well as standard modules for everyday upgrades.
  • Kingston: offers the ValueRAM line for general upgrades and the FURY line for gaming PCs.
  • Corsair: its Vengeance modules are popular in custom-built desktops.
  • Crucial: the consumer memory brand of Micron, a leading memory chip manufacturer.
  • Transcend: a Taiwanese maker of memory modules and flash storage.
  • GOODRAM: a Polish memory and storage brand with modules for desktops and laptops.

DDR4 memory FAQ

How much DDR4 memory do I need?

8 GB is enough for basic office work and web browsing, while 16 GB is a sensible target for most modern PCs and laptops. Video editing, virtual machines and demanding games benefit from 32 GB or more. Check your motherboard or laptop for the maximum supported capacity first.

What is the difference between DIMM and SO-DIMM?

DIMM is the full-size module used in desktops and servers, and SO-DIMM is the smaller version used in laptops and many compact PCs. DDR4 DIMMs have 288 pins and SO-DIMMs have 260. They will not fit each other's slots.

Is 3200 MHz DDR4 worth it over 2666 MHz?

It can be, but only if your processor and motherboard support 3200 MHz. The gain in everyday tasks is small, though integrated graphics and some games can benefit from faster memory. If your system supports only 2666 MHz, faster memory will simply run at the lower speed.

Can I use ECC memory in a normal PC?

Usually not. Most consumer desktops and laptops do not support ECC, and some will not start with it installed. ECC memory is intended for servers and workstations whose platform is built to use it.
