PC power supplies

PC power supplies

PC power supplies for desktop builds and upgrades, from units up to 650 W for office and entry-level gaming PCs to models of 1000 W and above for high-end graphics cards. The range also covers SFX and TFX units, external power adapters and server and OEM supplies, from brands such as Chieftec, ASUS, Thermaltake, DeepCool and Corsair.

How to choose a PC power supply

Wattage. Add up the power draw of the processor and graphics card, then leave some headroom for upgrades and for the supply to run below its limit. Our range is split into units up to 650 W, 700 to 950 W and 1000 W and above, so a modest office PC and a build with a top-end graphics card are both covered.

Efficiency rating. The 80 Plus rating (Bronze, Gold, Platinum, Titanium) shows how much of the power drawn from the wall reaches your components as usable energy. A higher tier wastes less as heat and usually runs cooler and quieter, which matters most in a PC that is on for many hours a day.

Form factor. Most desktop cases take a standard ATX supply. Small cases often need SFX or TFX, and our range has a separate subcategory for these, so check your case specification before ordering.

Connectors and modularity. Check that the supply has enough PCIe power connectors for your graphics card, and the newer 12VHPWR or 12V-2x6 connector if the card uses it. Fully modular cables make a tidy build easier, while non-modular units are common in cheaper office and budget systems.

PC power supply brands we carry

  • Corsair: known for its RM and HX power supply series aimed at enthusiast and gaming builds.
  • Thermaltake: offers the Toughpower series, a familiar name in gaming and high-wattage supplies.
  • ASUS, MSI, GIGABYTE and ASRock: motherboard and graphics card makers whose power supplies are designed to match their own gaming ranges, such as ASUS ROG and TUF Gaming and MSI MPG and MAG.
  • Chieftec: a Taiwanese maker of ATX power supplies and PC cases, and the brand with the most models in our range.
  • DeepCool: best known for CPU coolers, with a power supply line that suits builders who want to keep the same brand across cooling and power.

PC power supply FAQ

How many watts does my PC need?

Most office and basic gaming PCs run comfortably on a supply of up to 650 W. A system with a mid-range or high-end graphics card usually needs 700 W or more, and the graphics card manufacturer's recommended minimum is the best starting point. Choosing a little above that figure leaves room for future upgrades.

What does 80 Plus mean on a power supply?

80 Plus is an efficiency certification showing that a supply converts at least 80% of the power it draws into usable power at tested loads. The higher tiers, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Titanium, convert more and waste less as heat. A higher tier can lower electricity use and fan noise, but it does not change the maximum wattage.

Can I fit an SFX power supply in a standard ATX case?

Often yes, but only with a mounting bracket that adapts the smaller SFX body to the ATX opening. Some SFX units include one, others do not, so check the product details. The reverse does not work: a full-size ATX supply will not fit a case built for SFX.

Is a modular power supply worth it?

A modular supply is worth it if you want a tidy build or have a small case with limited airflow, because you connect only the cables you need. It does not improve performance on its own. For a simple PC with few components, a non-modular unit works just as well.
