Gaming laptops

Gaming laptops

Gaming laptops are portable computers built around a dedicated graphics card, a fast display and a cooling system designed for long sessions. They suit gamers, and also students and creators who need graphics performance away from a desk. Our range of over 900 models includes CAPTIVA, ASUS, HP, Acer, MSI and Lenovo.

How to choose a gaming laptop

Graphics card. The graphics card sets the frame rates you will get, so it deserves the largest share of your budget. Most gaming laptops use NVIDIA GeForce RTX chips, and some use AMD Radeon. Keep in mind that the same chip name can perform differently depending on the power limit the manufacturer sets, which is usually higher in thicker chassis.

Screen. A refresh rate of 144 Hz or more makes fast games such as shooters look noticeably smoother than a standard 60 Hz panel. Full HD is easier for the graphics card to drive, while 1440p looks sharper but needs a stronger GPU to hold high frame rates. Check the panel type too, as IPS panels generally give better colour and viewing angles than basic ones.

Processor and memory. Look for an Intel Core i5, i7 or i9, or an AMD Ryzen 5, 7 or 9, and avoid pairing a top processor with a weak graphics card. 16 GB of RAM is a sensible starting point for current games, and 32 GB helps if you stream, edit video or keep many programs open while playing.

Storage. Modern games often take up tens of gigabytes each, so a 512 GB SSD fills quickly. A 1 TB NVMe SSD is more comfortable, and a free M.2 slot lets you add more later.

Cooling, size and battery. A 15 or 16 inch laptop balances portability and cooling, while 17 inch models usually have more room for fans and heat pipes. Thin and light designs are easier to carry but may throttle under sustained load. Gaming on battery reduces performance and drains the cell fast, so plan to play while plugged in.

Gaming laptop FAQ

What is the difference between a gaming laptop and a normal laptop?

A gaming laptop has a dedicated graphics card and stronger cooling, which normal laptops usually lack. It also tends to have a faster screen and a more powerful processor. The trade-offs are higher weight, louder fans and shorter battery life.

How much RAM and storage does a gaming laptop need?

16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD are a workable minimum for most current games. A 1 TB SSD is more practical, because individual game installs can be very large. If you also stream or edit video, 32 GB of RAM gives more headroom.

What refresh rate should I choose?

For fast competitive games, choose 144 Hz or higher. For slower story-driven games, 60 Hz is still playable, but higher rates feel smoother. A high refresh rate only pays off if the graphics card can produce enough frames to match it.

Can I use a gaming laptop for work or study?

Yes, a gaming laptop handles office work, programming, video editing and 3D design well because of its processor and graphics card. It is usually heavier than a standard laptop and has a shorter battery life. Choose a lighter 15 or 16 inch model if you will carry it daily.
