Laptop accessories

Laptop accessories in our range cover docking stations, USB hubs, laptop security locks, laptop stands, and screen protectors and privacy filters. They suit anyone who wants to turn a laptop into a full desk setup or protect it in the office and on the move. Leading brands include DELL, StarTech.com, Kensington and Lenovo.

How to choose laptop accessories

Laptop connection. Check which ports your laptop has before anything else. Docking stations and USB hubs usually connect over USB-C, and if you want to drive monitors through that port it needs DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt support. Some docks are made for specific laptop families, while universal USB-C docks work across brands.

Monitors and ports. Count how many external screens you plan to use and at what resolution, then check the dock's HDMI and DisplayPort outputs. Also look at the number of USB-A ports, Ethernet and card reader slots, since these are the connections people most often run out of.

Power delivery. A dock that charges your laptop should supply at least as much wattage as the original charger. Thin office laptops often need around 65 W, while workstation models can need 90 W or more, so check the label on your power adapter.

Security lock slot. Look at the lock slot on the side of your laptop. Many models use the standard K-Slot, but some thin laptops use a smaller Nano slot or a wedge-shaped one, and the lock must match. Choose between a key and a combination depending on how many people share the device.

Screen size and fit. Privacy filters and screen protectors are cut for specific diagonals and aspect ratios such as 16:9 and 16:10. For stands, check the maximum laptop size and whether the height or angle can be adjusted.

  • Lenovo: offers USB-C and Thunderbolt docks built around its ThinkPad range.
  • 3M: well known for privacy filters that narrow the viewing angle of a screen.
  • DICOTA: specialises in laptop bags and cases, and also makes privacy filters and other business accessories.

  • Targus: long associated with laptop cases and backpacks, as well as docks and security locks.
  • HP: makes docks and accessories matched to its own business laptops.

Also in our range: Conceptronic, i-tec and LogiLink.

Docking stations are the largest subcategory, followed by USB hubs, laptop security locks, laptop stands, and screen protectors and privacy filters. Smaller groups include USB cables and adapters, card readers, drive enclosures, cooling pads, power adapters and laptop batteries.

Frequently asked questions about laptop accessories

What is the difference between a docking station and a USB hub?

A USB hub adds extra USB ports, and some models also add HDMI or Ethernet. A docking station goes further by combining video outputs, network, several USB ports and often power delivery in one unit. If you only need a few more ports, a hub is enough. For a desk with monitors, keyboard and charging, a dock is the better fit.

Will a USB-C docking station work with any laptop?

Not always. The laptop's USB-C port must support video output through DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt for the monitors to work. Charging through the dock also depends on the laptop accepting USB-C power. Check the laptop specifications before buying.

How do I know which security lock fits my laptop?

Find the small lock slot on the edge of the laptop and compare its shape with the lock type listed for the product. Most laptops use the standard K-Slot, but some use a Nano slot or a wedge-shaped slot. The lock needs to match the slot, otherwise it will not secure the laptop.

Does a privacy filter make the screen darker?

Usually yes, slightly. A privacy filter limits the viewing angle so that people beside you cannot read the screen, and this reduces some brightness for you as well. You may need to raise the screen brightness a little when using one.
