Battery chargers

Battery chargers

Battery chargers in our range are mainly chargers for rechargeable cells and chargers made for specific devices, suited to people who run torches, handheld equipment or other battery-powered gear. Over 20 models are listed, with XTAR, Panasonic, Energizer and Zebra among the leading brands.

How to choose a battery charger

Battery chemistry. A charger must match the cells you use. Li-ion cells such as 18650 and NiMH cells such as AA and AAA need different charging methods, so check the chemistries listed on the charger before buying. Some models handle both, which helps if you own a mix.

Number of bays. More bays charge more cells at once, but it matters more whether each bay works independently. Independent channels let you charge a single cell, or cells at different charge levels, without problems.

Charging current. Higher current charges faster, yet a very high rate is not suitable for small or older cells. Adjustable current is useful if you charge cells of different capacities.

Safety protections. Look for protection against overcharging, short circuits and reverse polarity. A display or indicator showing charge status also helps, particularly with Li-ion cells, which are less forgiving than NiMH.

Universal or device-specific. A charger from a maker of handheld scanners or similar equipment normally fits only that maker's batteries or devices. A cell charger takes standard sizes instead. Check the compatibility list on the product page before ordering.

Battery charger brands we carry

  • XTAR: the largest group in our range, known for chargers for Li-ion cells such as 18650, as well as torches that use them.
  • Panasonic: a long-established battery maker, known for rechargeable NiMH cells with low self-discharge and the chargers made to go with them.
  • Energizer: best known for household batteries, with chargers that typically cover AA and AAA rechargeable cells.
  • Zebra and Datalogic: known for barcode scanners and mobile computers used in warehouses and shops, with chargers made for their own handheld devices.
  • Kärcher: known for cleaning equipment, with chargers that go with its cordless machines.

Also in our range: Qoltec and Grandstream Networks.

Battery charger FAQ

Can I use any charger with any rechargeable battery?

No. The charger must support the battery's chemistry and, for cell chargers, its size. Charging a Li-ion cell in a charger designed only for NiMH can damage the cell or create a safety risk. Always check the supported cell types before use.

What is the difference between a Li-ion and a NiMH charger?

The two chemistries are charged with different voltage and cut-off methods. Li-ion cells need precise voltage control, while NiMH cells are usually ended by detecting a small voltage change. Many modern chargers support both types, but this should be stated clearly in the specification.

How many bays do I need in a battery charger?

Choose the number of bays based on how many cells your equipment uses at once. Two bays suit a single torch or a pair of cells, while four bays suit devices that take sets of four. Independent bays give you more flexibility if you charge cells one at a time.

Can I leave batteries in the charger overnight?

With a charger that has proper termination and protection circuits, this is generally acceptable, but it is better to remove cells once they are full. Basic chargers without these features should not be left unattended. Check the manufacturer's guidance for your model and cell type.
