How to choose a laptop adapter up to 50 W
Output voltage. The voltage must match the one printed on your original charger. In our range you will find 19.5 V, 20 V, 19 V and 12 V adapters, plus a few at 24 V and 5 V. A 19 V and a 19.5 V charger are close, but it is safest to copy the exact figure from the label.
Wattage. Choose the same wattage as the original or a higher one, never a lower one. Most adapters here are 45 W, 40 W or 50 W, with a smaller number at 33 W, 36 W and 24 W. An underpowered charger can run hot, charge very slowly or fail to keep the laptop running under load.
Connector. Plug size and shape matter as much as the electrical figures. Laptops use barrel plugs of different diameters, slim rectangular tips or USB-C, and some Dell models have a centre pin that the laptop reads to identify the charger. Check your laptop model number against the adapter's compatibility list.
Input voltage. Most adapters in our range accept 100 to 240 V, which works with South African mains and for travel abroad. Check this on the label if you buy a less common model.
Original or compatible. Adapters from the laptop maker are made for specific model families. Compatible adapters from third-party brands often cost less and cover several models, but you need to verify the voltage, wattage and plug yourself.
