Mobile workstations are laptops built for CAD, 3D modelling, video editing, simulation and data work that would strain an ordinary notebook. Our range covers models from HP, Lenovo, Apple and Dell, with 14 to 18 inch displays and, in many models, professional NVIDIA RTX graphics.
How to choose a mobile workstation
Graphics. The graphics card matters most for CAD, rendering and GPU-accelerated software. Our range includes NVIDIA RTX PRO Blackwell cards from the entry-level RTX PRO 500 up to the RTX PRO 3000, plus some RTX 500 Ada models. Check your software vendor's recommended GPU first, because light 2D drafting needs far less than 3D rendering. Some models have no discrete card at all and rely on integrated graphics.
Processor and memory. Intel Core Ultra 7 and Core Ultra 9 are the most common processors in our range, alongside AMD Ryzen AI 7 PRO and Ryzen AI 9 HX PRO. Choose a higher-tier chip if you compile code, run simulations or export large video projects. Pair it with plenty of RAM, since engineering and design files often fill memory before the processor becomes the limit.
Display. A 16 inch screen is the most common size here, and 14 inch, 14.5 inch and 18 inch models are also available. The 1920 x 1200 resolution is the most common, with 2560 x 1600, 2880 x 1800 and 3840 x 2400 for detailed work. Most panels are IPS, and some are OLED, which gives deeper blacks but may not suit every colour-critical workflow.
Storage and battery. A 1 TB drive is the most common capacity in our range, with 512 GB and 2 TB models also listed. Large project files, cached footage and local datasets fill a small drive quickly. Battery capacities run from about 75 Wh to 99.9 Wh. Airlines generally limit laptop batteries to 100 Wh, so these larger packs are still allowed on flights.
Mobile workstation brands we carry
- HP: known for the ZBook line, which is aimed at engineers, designers and data professionals.
- Lenovo: makes the ThinkPad P series, which combines workstation graphics with the ThinkPad keyboard and build.
- Apple: offers MacBook Pro laptops with Apple's own chips, which are popular for video editing, music production and software development.
- Dell: has a long-running workstation line, sold for years as Precision and now as Dell Pro Max.
Mobile workstation FAQ
What is the difference between a mobile workstation and a normal laptop?
A mobile workstation is designed for sustained professional workloads, while a normal laptop is built for general use. It usually has a more capable processor, professional graphics, more memory and better cooling. Many models are also tested for compatibility with engineering and design software.
Do I need a discrete graphics card in a mobile workstation?
You need one if you work in 3D CAD, rendering, simulation or GPU-accelerated editing. Integrated graphics can handle documents, 2D drawing and light analysis. Our range includes models with and without a discrete NVIDIA card, so match the choice to your software.
Which screen size suits a mobile workstation?
A 16 inch display suits most people because it gives enough room for CAD toolbars and timelines without becoming too heavy to carry. A 14 inch model is easier to travel with, while an 18 inch model works better as a desk replacement. Resolution matters too, so consider 2560 x 1600 or higher for detailed work.
How much storage does a mobile workstation need?
1 TB is a sensible starting point for most professional users. Choose 2 TB if you handle large CAD assemblies, video footage or datasets locally. A 512 GB drive works only if your projects live mainly on a network or in cloud storage.
