Laptop computers

Laptop computers in our range cover business laptops, gaming laptops, ultrabooks, mobile workstations, 2-in-1 models, Chromebooks and refurbished machines for home, study and office use. The category also holds chargers, batteries, replacement screens, bags and cooling pads. Lenovo, Dell, HP, ASUS, Acer and Apple are the main laptop brands.

How to choose a laptop

Match the type to the job. Business laptops suit office work, video calls and regular travel. Gaming laptops add dedicated graphics and stronger cooling, and mobile workstations are built for CAD, rendering and other professional software. Chromebooks are limited to web and cloud apps, which is enough for many schools. Rugged models are for sites and workshops.

Processor, memory and storage. For everyday office work and study, 16 GB of RAM and an SSD keep many browser tabs and documents running smoothly. 8 GB can manage basic browsing, but check whether the memory is soldered, because many thin laptops cannot be upgraded later. Video editing, 3D work and modern games need more memory and a dedicated graphics chip.

Screen size and weight. Screens of 13 to 14 inches are easiest to carry every day. A 15 or 16 inch screen gives more room for spreadsheets and side-by-side windows, and 17 inch models are mostly gaming or workstation machines. Check the resolution and whether the finish is matte or glossy, as matte reduces reflections in bright offices.

Battery life and ports. Ultrabooks and business laptops usually last longer away from a socket than gaming models. Look for USB-C charging if you want one charger for phone and laptop, and check for HDMI, Ethernet or Thunderbolt if you connect to monitors or docking stations.

Spare parts and accessories. Chargers, batteries and replacement screens must match the exact model or part number of your laptop. Bags, backpacks and cases should be chosen by screen size, so measure or check the specification first.

Laptop questions answered

Which laptop is best for office work and study?

A business laptop or a home and study laptop with 16 GB of RAM and an SSD is a sensible choice for office work and study. Choose a 13 to 15 inch screen depending on how much you carry it. Good battery life and USB-C charging matter more here than a fast graphics chip.

What is the difference between an ultrabook and a business laptop?

An ultrabook is defined mainly by being thin, light and long-lasting on battery. A business laptop focuses on durability, security features, docking support and easy servicing, and it may be thicker. The two overlap, and many business laptops are also ultrabooks.

How do I find the right charger or battery for my laptop?

Start with the exact model name or part number, usually printed on the label underneath the laptop. Match the connector and voltage, and use a charger with the same or higher wattage than the original. For USB-C charging, the charger must supply enough wattage for your laptop.

Is a refurbished laptop worth considering?

A refurbished laptop can be worthwhile if you want business-grade build quality at a lower cost. These are used machines that have been tested and restored. Check the stated condition, the battery and the warranty terms on the product page before buying.
