How to choose an air purifier or humidifier
Purifier, humidifier or both. A purifier filters particles out of the air, while a humidifier adds moisture. Choose a purifier for dust, pollen and pet hair, and a humidifier for dry air, which often causes a scratchy throat and dry skin. Some airwashers and hybrid units do a little of each.
Room size. Check the room size the manufacturer states for the unit, and pick a model rated above your actual floor area rather than at the limit. A small humidifier will struggle in an open-plan lounge, and a purifier sized for a study will take far longer to clean the air in a large room.
Filtration. Look for a true HEPA filter if allergies are the reason for buying, and an activated carbon layer if cooking smells, smoke or pet odours are the problem. Check the price and availability of replacement filters before you buy, as they are a running cost.
Noise level. For a bedroom, look for a quiet night mode and a display that can be dimmed or switched off. Fan-driven purifiers are louder on their highest setting, so choose a model that cleans well at a low speed.

Do I need an air purifier or a humidifier?
It depends on the problem. If you notice dust, pollen, smoke or pet hair, a purifier with a HEPA filter is the right choice. If the air feels dry and your skin or throat is irritated, particularly in heated rooms, a humidifier will help more.
What humidity level is best at home?
Most indoor spaces are comfortable at roughly 40 to 60 per cent relative humidity. Going well above that can encourage mould and dust mites. A humidifier with a built-in humidity sensor, or a separate hygrometer, makes it easier to stay in range.
How often should I change the filter?
