Turntables

Turntables

Turntables for playing vinyl records, from straightforward all-in-one players with built-in speakers to separate decks for a hi-fi system. They suit anyone starting a record collection or replacing an old deck. Leading names in our range include MUSE, DENVER, AKAI and LENCO.

How to choose a turntable

Built-in speakers or separate system. A turntable with integrated speakers works straight out of the box and suits a bedroom or small flat. A deck without speakers needs an amplifier or powered speakers, but it gives you room to upgrade each part later and usually sounds fuller.

Phono preamp. The signal from a record is very weak and needs a phono stage before it reaches a normal amplifier input. Many turntables have one built in and a switch to bypass it. If your amplifier already has a phono input, you can turn the built-in one off.

Drive type. Belt-drive decks isolate the platter from motor vibration and are common on hi-fi models. Direct-drive decks spin more steadily and are favoured by DJs. For home listening, either type is fine if it is well made.

Playback speeds. Almost all turntables play 33 and 45 rpm records. If you own older shellac discs, check that the model also supports 78 rpm and has a suitable stylus.

Connectivity and cartridge. Bluetooth lets you send sound to wireless speakers or headphones. USB output allows you to digitise records on a computer. Also check whether the cartridge and stylus can be replaced, because the stylus wears and needs changing after many hours of use.

Turntable FAQ

Do I need a separate preamp for a turntable?

Only if neither the turntable nor your amplifier has a phono stage. Many turntables include a built-in preamp, which lets you connect them to powered speakers or an amplifier with a standard line input. Check the product description for a phono or line switch before buying.

Is a belt-drive or direct-drive turntable better?

Neither is better for every listener. Belt-drive decks reduce motor noise and are popular for home hi-fi use. Direct-drive decks reach speed quickly and hold it steadily, which is why DJs often prefer them.

Can I connect a turntable to Bluetooth speakers?

Yes, if the turntable has Bluetooth transmission. This sends the record's sound to a wireless speaker or headphones. A turntable that only receives Bluetooth cannot do this, so check the specification carefully.

Can I copy vinyl records to my computer?

Yes, if the turntable has a USB output or you connect it to an audio interface. With a USB model, you plug it into your computer and record using free audio software. The result is a digital file you can store or play on other devices.
