Bags, cases

Camera bags and cases for photographers and videographers: shoulder bags, backpacks, hard cases and padded pouches for bodies, lenses and accessories. The range covers brands such as HAMA, B&W, Fujifilm, Case Logic and Lowepro, from light everyday carry cases to protective outdoor cases.

How to choose a camera bag or case

Bag type. Backpacks spread the weight across both shoulders, so they suit full-day shoots and hiking with a lot of kit. Shoulder bags and sling bags give quicker access to the camera, which helps for street and event photography. A hard case is the better option for transport, storage or travel by air or car.

Size and fit. Check the internal dimensions against your kit with the lens attached, not just the camera body. Count what you carry: extra lenses, a flash, batteries, filters and perhaps a small tripod. Adjustable dividers make it easier to rearrange the interior as your kit changes, and a slightly roomier bag is usually more practical than one that is filled to the limit.

Protection. Thick padding protects against knocks, while a water-resistant outer fabric or a rain cover helps in drizzle. For serious exposure to water, dust or impact, look for a hard case with a sealed lid and a pressure valve. Soft pouches protect against scratches and light bumps, but they are not meant for rough handling.

Comfort and security. Padded, adjustable straps and a ventilated back panel make a real difference over several hours. Side or back access panels stop others from reaching your gear in a crowd. If you also carry a laptop or tablet, check that the bag has a separate padded compartment for it.

Camera bags and cases: frequently asked questions

Which type of camera bag is best for travel?

A camera backpack is usually the most practical choice for travel, because it carries the weight on both shoulders and holds more than a shoulder bag. Choose one with a padded camera section and a separate space for personal items. For checked luggage or transport in a vehicle, a hard case gives stronger protection.

How do I know what size camera bag I need?

Lay out everything you want to carry and compare it with the internal dimensions of the bag. Measure the camera with the longest lens attached, as this is often the limiting factor. Allow a little spare room for an extra battery or lens later.

Is a hard case better than a soft camera bag?

A hard case protects better against impact, crushing, water and dust, so it suits transport and storage. A soft bag is lighter and easier to carry for a full day of shooting. Many photographers use a hard case for travel and a soft bag on location.

Can I use a camera backpack as an everyday bag?

Yes, many camera backpacks work as everyday bags, especially those with a laptop compartment and removable dividers. Removing the dividers frees up space for clothes or books. Check that the padding and the back access panel still suit how you carry it.
