How to choose a flashlight or headlamp
Flashlight or headlamp. A handheld flashlight is easier to aim and usually throws light further, which suits checking the garden, a car engine or a dark corridor. A headlamp leaves both hands free and lights wherever you look, so it is the better option for repairs, camp chores, running and cycling.
Brightness and beam distance. Lumens measure total light output, while beam distance tells you how far the light actually reaches. A few hundred lumens is enough for most household and camping tasks, and higher outputs only matter for large open areas or long-range spotting. Brighter modes drain the battery faster, so check the runtime at the setting you will really use.
Beam shape and focus. A wide, flood-style beam lights the area around you and suits close work, while a narrow beam reaches distant objects. Torches with an adjustable head let you switch between the two by sliding or turning the lens, which saves carrying two lights.
Power source. Disposable AA or AAA cells can be replaced anywhere and work well in a glovebox or emergency kit. Rechargeable lithium-ion packs cost less over time and usually charge over USB or in a dock, but they need topping up before a trip. Check whether a model takes standard cells or a dedicated battery pack.
Weather resistance and comfort. An IP rating shows protection against dust and water: IPX4 copes with splashes, while higher ratings handle heavy rain or brief immersion. On a headlamp, low weight, a padded adjustable strap and a tilting lamp head matter far more once you wear it for an hour or more.
