How to choose a tripod or selfie stick
Load capacity. Add up the weight of the camera, the heaviest lens and anything mounted on top, such as a flash or microphone. Pick a tripod rated comfortably above that total, because a support working near its limit sags and vibrates. Phone tripods and selfie sticks carry far less than tripods built for DSLRs.
Working height and folded length. A tripod should bring the camera to eye level without the centre column fully raised, since a long column reduces stability. If you travel or hike, folded length matters as much as maximum height. Legs with more sections fold shorter but are slightly less rigid.
Material. Aluminium tripods are affordable and sturdy, while carbon fibre is lighter and damps vibration better but costs more. A heavier tripod is steadier in wind, so lightness is not always an advantage for outdoor landscape work.
Head and mounting. Ball heads are quick to adjust for stills. Three-way pan and tilt heads allow precise levelling, and fluid heads give smooth pans for video. Nearly all cameras mount on a 1/4-inch thread, and a quick-release plate makes swapping between tripod and handheld shooting faster.
Type of support. Flexible-leg tripods wrap around railings and branches, table-top models suit vlogging and desks, and monopods give mobility at events. Selfie sticks are the simplest option for phones and action cameras, and the better ones add a clamp that holds the phone securely and a Bluetooth remote. Action cameras usually need a mount adapter.

What tripod do I need for a DSLR or mirrorless camera?
Choose a tripod whose rated load is clearly higher than your camera and heaviest lens combined. It should also reach eye level without a fully extended centre column. Full-size tripods from brands such as Cullmann, Walimex and Hama are built for this.
Is a carbon fibre tripod worth the extra cost?
Carbon fibre is worth it if you carry your tripod often, because it is noticeably lighter and absorbs vibration well. For studio or car-based work, an aluminium tripod is usually sufficient and costs less. Weight matters less when the tripod stays in one place.
Can I use a normal tripod with a smartphone?
Yes, as long as you add a phone holder clamp that screws onto the standard 1/4-inch thread. Many small tripods and selfie sticks include one already. A Bluetooth remote helps avoid shake when pressing the shutter.
Can a selfie stick be used with an action camera?
