Instant cameras

Instant cameras

Instant cameras print a photo within moments of taking it, either on chemical film or through a built-in printer on digital models. They suit gift buyers, party and wedding guests, and anyone who wants a physical print rather than a file. Fujifilm Instax, Kodak and Polaroid are the main brands in our range, which covers over 90 models.

How to choose an instant camera

Film format. Instax Mini prints are about the size of a bank card and fit in a wallet, Instax Square gives a roomier image, and Instax Wide is twice the width of Mini. Polaroid cameras use i-Type or 600 film, which gives the classic broad white frame. Film formats are not interchangeable between systems, so pick the camera and the print size together.

Running costs. Film is the main ongoing expense, and every print costs more than a standard photo print. Most film packs hold 8 to 10 shots, so check how widely available your chosen film is before you buy the camera.

Film or digital hybrid. A film camera produces a single print per shot, with no chance to retake it after the fact. A hybrid camera with a digital sensor and built-in printer lets you review a picture first and print only the ones you like, though print quality often differs from true instant film.

Controls and features. Simple point-and-shoot models set the exposure for you and suit children and casual use. Look for a close-up mode or lens for portraits, a selfie mirror, and a flash you can switch off if you shoot indoors. Check whether the camera takes AA batteries or charges over USB.

Instant camera FAQ

What is the difference between Instax and Polaroid?

Instax is Fujifilm's instant system and Polaroid is a separate one, each with its own film. Instax prints are usually smaller, with Mini the most familiar size, while Polaroid prints are larger with a wider white border. Film from one system does not fit cameras from the other.

Can I use any film in my instant camera?

No, you must use film made for your camera's system. Instax cameras take Instax film in the matching size, and Polaroid cameras take i-Type or 600 film depending on the model. Check the film name in the product specification before ordering.

How long does an instant photo take to develop?

It depends on the film. Instax prints generally show an image within a minute or two, while Polaroid film takes around 10 to 15 minutes to develop fully. Keep the print out of bright light while it develops.

Which instant camera is best as a gift?

A simple point-and-shoot Instax Mini is a sensible gift for most people, because it has few settings and film is easy to find. For someone who likes the vintage look, a Polaroid or Kodak model may suit better. If the recipient wants to choose which photos to print, consider a hybrid camera with a built-in printer.
