IP network cameras are security cameras that send video over a wired or wireless network, for homes, shops, offices and larger sites. Our range covers bullet, dome and turret models from Dahua, Axis, Reolink, Hikvision and TP-Link, among others, from entry-level units to professional cameras for multi-camera installations.
How to choose an IP network camera
Resolution. Cameras in our range run from 2 MP to 8 MP, with 4 MP, 5 MP and 8 MP well represented. 4 MP shows clearly more detail than 2 MP across a driveway or yard, while 8 MP helps when you want to zoom into recorded footage at a distance. Higher resolution also means larger recordings and more load on the recorder and network.
Form factor and placement. Bullet cameras are the largest group in our range: they are visible, easy to aim and usually wall-mounted outdoors. Dome cameras are harder to tamper with and suit ceilings, and turret cameras sit between the two and are easy to adjust. Many models are rated for both indoor and outdoor use, but for exposed locations check the IP weather rating as well.
Power and connectivity. Power over Ethernet (PoE) is the most common option here, because one network cable carries both power and data. Many cameras accept either PoE or a DC adapter, so check that your switch or recorder supplies enough PoE power. Wireless models are a smaller group and still need a power supply, so plan for a socket or cable at the camera position.
Mounting and compatibility. Ceiling, wall, pole clamp and desk mounts all appear in our range, and some cameras cover ceiling, wall and pole with the right bracket. Check that the camera works with your recorder or app. ONVIF is an open standard that lets cameras from different makers share one recorder, and Ubiquiti and Ajax cameras are designed to work within their own systems.

What is an IP network camera?
An IP network camera is a digital camera that sends its video over a network using an IP address, instead of through a dedicated video cable. It can be viewed on a recorder, a computer or a phone app. Most models connect by Ethernet cable, and some by Wi-Fi.
Do IP cameras need internet access?
No, an IP camera works on a local network without internet and can record to a recorder or memory card. Internet access is only needed for remote viewing on your phone or from another location. Without it, you can still view and record on the same network.
How many megapixels do I need?
For most homes and small shops, 4 MP is enough to see people and vehicles clearly. Choose 5 MP or 8 MP if you cover a wide area or want to zoom into recordings later. A 2 MP camera works for short distances, such as a door or a hallway.
Do I need a PoE switch for IP cameras?
You need a PoE switch or PoE recorder if your cameras are powered over the network cable. It saves running a separate power cable to each camera. Cameras that also accept a DC adapter can work without PoE, but you then need a power point near each one.
