Cameras

Cameras here cover security and IP cameras, camera accessories, digital cameras, dash cams, action cameras, instant cameras and network video recorders, for homeowners, businesses and photographers. Leading brands in our range include Hikvision, Axis, Dahua and Hama, with DJI, Neewer and Godox also well represented.

How to choose a camera

Purpose. Decide first what the camera has to do. A security camera is built to record continuously and send footage to a recorder or app, while a digital camera is built for image quality, lenses and manual control. Dash cams and action cameras are specialist tools with their own mounts and storage needs.

Resolution and low-light ability. For security work, higher resolution helps you identify faces and number plates at a distance, but night performance matters just as much. Look at the infrared range, sensor size and whether the camera offers colour footage in the dark. For photography, sensor size and lens options affect results more than the megapixel count.

Power, connection and storage. Many network cameras use Power over Ethernet (PoE), which carries power and data over one cable but needs a PoE switch or a recorder with PoE ports. Wi-Fi cameras are easier to place but still need a power source or battery. Check how footage is stored: a network video recorder, a microSD card, or cloud storage.

Weather protection and mounting. Outdoor cameras should carry a dust and water rating, with IP66 a common choice for exposed positions. Also check the operating temperature and the type of bracket included, since a wall, pole or ceiling mount can change where the camera can go.

Compatibility. Accessories, batteries, lenses and recorders are often tied to one brand or mount type. Confirm that a flash, tripod plate, memory card or recorder works with your camera before ordering.

  • Axis: known for introducing the network camera, and still focused on professional IP video systems.
  • Verkada: makes cloud-managed security cameras that are administered through a web platform rather than a local recorder.
  • TP-Link, Reolink and Ubiquiti: home and small-business security systems, including Wi-Fi and PoE cameras, with Ubiquiti cameras designed to run with its UniFi network equipment.
  • Hama: a German accessory maker, known for tripods, camera bags, cleaning kits and other photography extras.

Camera FAQ

What is the difference between an IP camera and an analogue CCTV camera?

An IP camera sends digital video over a network cable or Wi-Fi, while an analogue camera sends a video signal over coax cable to a DVR. IP cameras generally offer higher resolution, remote viewing and PoE power through a single cable. Analogue systems can be cheaper to keep if the cabling is already installed.

Do I need a network video recorder for IP cameras?

Not always, but a network video recorder is the usual choice for systems with several cameras. It stores footage on its own hard drives and keeps recording even if a single camera fails. A single camera at home can often manage with a microSD card or cloud storage instead.

Should I buy an action camera or a digital camera?

Choose an action camera if you want a small, waterproof or shock-resistant camera for sport, travel or helmet mounting. Choose a digital camera if image quality, zoom and manual settings matter more. Action cameras usually have a wide-angle fixed lens, while digital cameras give you more control over framing and exposure.

Can a dash cam record while the car is parked?

Some can, but it depends on the model. Parking mode usually needs the dash cam to be hardwired to the car's fuse box or powered by a separate battery pack. Check that the model supports parking mode and a large enough memory card before you buy.
