Coffee grinders

Coffee grinders

This category covers coffee grinders for home use: manual hand-crank models and electric grinders, in both burr and blade designs. Our range of over 70 models includes Comandante, Fellow, Smeg and Bosch, alongside Adler, Caso and Gastroback. Beans ground just before brewing keep more of their aroma than pre-ground coffee.

How to choose a coffee grinder

Burr or blade. Burr grinders crush beans between two abrasive surfaces set a fixed distance apart, which gives a more even particle size. Blade grinders chop beans unevenly, so one cup can taste bitter and sour at the same time. For espresso or filter coffee, a burr grinder is the safer choice.

Hand or electric. A hand grinder is quiet, needs no power and is easy to take on trips, but grinding enough for several cups takes effort. Electric grinders are faster and make more sense if you brew every morning or for several people. Our range includes both types.

Grind adjustment. Espresso needs a fine setting with small steps between them, while French press and filter coffee need coarser settings. Check that the grinder covers your brewing method. A model with only a few steps can be limiting for espresso, whereas a finely stepped or stepless dial gives more control.

Capacity and cleaning. Look at the size of the bean hopper and how easily the ground coffee container comes off. Grinders where the burrs can be reached and brushed out are easier to keep clean, which matters because old coffee oils turn rancid and affect flavour.

Coffee grinder brands we carry

  • Fellow: American brand known for electric burr grinders with a minimalist look, favoured by filter coffee fans.
  • Smeg: Italian brand famous for its retro 1950s styling, so a Smeg grinder matches its kettles and toasters.

Coffee grinder FAQ

Is a burr grinder better than a blade grinder?

Yes, for most brewing methods. A burr grinder produces grounds of a much more consistent size, which gives more even extraction and a cleaner taste. A blade grinder is acceptable for coarse grinds such as French press, but it struggles with espresso.

Is a hand coffee grinder worth buying?

A hand grinder is worth it if you make one or two cups at a time and value quiet operation. It needs no electricity and often takes up less space than an electric model. If you regularly brew for a family or grind large amounts, an electric grinder will save you time.

How fine should I grind coffee for espresso?

Espresso needs a fine grind, finer than for filter coffee and much finer than for French press. The right setting depends on your machine and beans, so adjust it until the shot runs for roughly 25 to 30 seconds. A grinder with small adjustment steps makes that fine-tuning easier.

How often should I clean a coffee grinder?

Brush out loose grounds every few days if you use the grinder daily, and do a deeper clean of the burrs every few weeks. Coffee oils build up over time and can make fresh beans taste stale. Always unplug an electric grinder before cleaning it.
