Drip coffee makers

Drip coffee makers

Drip coffee makers brew filter coffee by passing hot water over ground coffee, and suit households, offices and anyone who wants several cups at once. Our range of over 150 models includes jug and single-cup machines, plus some that take whole beans, from Philips, Severin, Krups and De'Longhi.

How to choose a drip coffee maker

Capacity. Our range runs from 2-cup machines to 15-cup models, with 10 and 12 cups appearing often. Cup ratings are usually based on small servings, so a 10-cup machine fills roughly five mugs. Single people and couples can choose a small model, while families and offices will want a larger jug. Water tanks in the range commonly hold between 1.25 and 1.8 litres.

Ground coffee or beans. Most drip coffee makers take ground coffee and a filter. Some models in our range accept whole beans and grind them just before brewing, which gives fresher flavour but means more parts to clean. A few also work with pods or capsules, so check the input type before you buy.

Jug, cup or thermos. Glass jug models are the most familiar and suit serving several people, though the coffee stays warm only while the hotplate is on. Models that fill a cup directly suit one drinker. A thermos jug keeps coffee hot without a hotplate, so it is worth considering if you drink coffee slowly through the morning.

Automation and controls. Fully automatic, semi-automatic and manual machines are all in our range, and the difference shows in how much you need to do by hand. Controls are mostly buttons or touch panels, with a few rotary dials. Look for a timer or programmable start if you want coffee ready when you wake up.

Drip coffee makers: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a drip coffee maker and an espresso machine?

A drip coffee maker lets hot water flow through ground coffee under gravity, producing a larger, milder cup of filter coffee. An espresso machine forces water through finely ground coffee under pressure, producing a small, concentrated shot. If you mostly drink black coffee in mugs, a drip machine is the simpler choice.

How many cups do I need from a drip coffee maker?

Choose a size based on how many mugs you pour at once, not the number on the box. Cup ratings are based on small servings, so a 10-cup machine gives about five mugs. Our range offers 2-cup machines for one or two people and 10 to 15-cup machines for families or small offices.

Can a drip coffee maker use coffee beans?

Some can. Models with a built-in grinder take whole beans and grind them before each brew, and several of these are in our range. Standard drip machines need ready-ground coffee, so check the coffee input type in the specifications.

Do drip coffee makers need paper filters?

It depends on the model. Many drip coffee makers use disposable paper filters, while some come with a reusable permanent filter. Machines with a built-in grinder may handle filtering differently, so check the product details for the filter type.
