How to choose a coffee machine
Machine type. Drip coffee makers brew large batches of filter coffee, while espresso machines make small, concentrated shots and are the usual base for cappuccino and latte. Fully automatic machines grind, tamp and brew at the touch of a button, and manual or semi-automatic espresso machines give you more control but need more practice.
Coffee input. Some machines take whole beans, some take ground coffee, and others only accept capsules or pods. In our range you will find machines for beans, for ground coffee, for capsules and for pods, and several accept more than one type. Choose by how much effort you are willing to put in each morning and how much you care about freshness.
Pressure. Many espresso machines in our range are rated at 15 bar, with some at 19 bar. Espresso is generally extracted at around 9 bar, so the rating is a pump maximum rather than a measure of taste. Temperature stability, a good grinder and fresh coffee matter more than a bigger number.
Capacity and size. Single and two-cup machines suit one or two drinkers. Drip coffee makers in our range commonly hold 8 to 15 cups, which makes more sense for families or an office. Check the water tank size and the width of the machine against your counter space.
Controls. Models in our range use buttons, touch panels or rotary dials, and some combine them. Buttons and dials are quick to learn, while touch screens usually make it easier to store drink settings.

Coffee machine FAQ
What is the difference between an espresso machine and a fully automatic coffee machine?
An espresso machine forces hot water through ground coffee, and in manual or semi-automatic models you grind, dose and tamp yourself. A fully automatic machine does those steps for you from whole beans. It is faster and more consistent, while a manual machine gives more control over the shot.
Is a drip coffee maker or an espresso machine better for a family?
A drip coffee maker is usually better when several people want filter coffee at the same time, since many models brew 10 to 15 cups in one go. An espresso machine suits households that prefer milk drinks or strong single servings. Many homes keep one of each.
Do I need a separate coffee grinder?
You need one if you buy whole beans and your machine has no built-in grinder. Freshly ground coffee tastes noticeably better than pre-ground, because it loses aroma quickly. Bean-to-cup machines include a grinder, and machines for ground coffee, capsules or pods do not need one.
How often should I descale a coffee machine?
Follow the schedule in the manufacturer's manual, as it depends on the model and on how hard your water is. Many people descale every few months, and more often in hard water areas. Regular descaling protects the heater and keeps the coffee tasting clean.
