How to choose DJ, studio and stage equipment
Decide where it will be used. A bedroom studio, a mobile DJ setup and a fixed venue installation need different gear. Work out the room size and audience first, then pick equipment to match.
Match the sound equipment to the room. Check the power rating, the connection types (XLR, jack, RCA or Bluetooth) and whether the speakers are active or passive. Active speakers have the amplifier built in, while passive ones need a separate amplifier. A mixer or controller should have enough channels for every source you plan to connect.
Check how the lighting is controlled. Most professional stage lights are operated over DMX, so look at how many DMX channels each fixture uses and whether your controller can handle the total. LED fixtures run cooler and draw less power than older lamp-based lights, which helps at long events and with limited power supplies.

What does DMX mean on stage lights?
DMX is a standard control signal that lets one controller operate many lights over cables. Each fixture uses a set number of channels, and more channels usually mean more functions you can control separately, such as colour, dimming and movement. Add up the channels of all your fixtures before choosing a controller.
What is the difference between a fog machine and a haze machine?
A fog machine produces dense clouds that disperse fairly quickly, while a haze machine produces a thin, even mist that makes light beams visible. Haze is often used when the aim is to show off lighting rather than to fill the room. Check the venue's smoke alarm rules and use the fluid the machine is designed for.
Should I buy active or passive speakers?
