Blenders and mixers

Blenders and mixers

Blenders and mixers in our range include immersion blenders, tabletop blenders, hand mixers, sport blenders and cooking blenders, for home cooks who make smoothies, soups, sauces and batters. Brands include Bosch, Philips, Braun and NutriBullet, with SMEG and Kenwood for those who want a particular look or a well-known name.

How to choose a blender or mixer

Type. Decide the main job first. An immersion blender goes straight into the pan or beaker and suits soups, purées and sauces. A tabletop blender with a jug handles smoothies, crushed ice and larger batches, while a hand mixer is for whisking eggs, cream and cake batter. Sport and portable blenders are for single servings, and cooking blenders can also heat the contents.

Power. Models in our range run from around 350 W to 1200 W, and 1000 W is a common rating. Lower wattages are enough for soft fruit, sauces and whipping. If you plan to crush ice, blend frozen fruit or grind nuts, a tabletop blender of 1000 W or more copes more easily.

Blades and materials. Most blenders in our range have stainless steel blades, which resist rust and keep their edge well. Check whether the jug is glass or plastic: glass does not stain or hold odours, while plastic is lighter and less likely to break if dropped.

Cleaning. Many models in our range have dishwasher-proof parts, which saves time if you blend daily. Immersion blenders are quick to rinse by hand, whereas jugs with fixed blades take more care. Look at how easily the blade assembly comes apart.

Power source. Nearly all blenders and mixers here run from the mains. A few portable and sport models are battery-powered, which suits use at work, in the gym or while travelling, but they are better for small, soft portions than for heavy blending.

  • Philips: known for tabletop and hand blenders in its Viva and Avance collections, many with ProBlend blade systems.
  • Braun: credited with launching the first electric hand blender, and still best known for its MultiQuick immersion blenders.
  • NutriBullet: specialises in cup-style personal blenders that blend and serve a single smoothie or shake.
  • SMEG: known for appliances in a retro 1950s style, with blenders and mixers designed to match its other kitchen products.
  • Kenwood: best known for its Chef stand mixers and kitchen machines, as well as hand blenders and mixers.

Also in our range: ZELMER, TEFAL, ADLER, ARIETE, GASTROBACK and ESPERANZA.

Frequently asked questions about blenders and mixers

What is the difference between a blender and a mixer?

A blender uses fast-spinning blades to purée, crush and liquefy ingredients, so it is used for smoothies, soups and sauces. A mixer, such as a hand mixer, uses whisks or beaters to add air to eggs, cream and batter. If you bake often, a hand mixer is the better tool, and if you make drinks and soups, a blender is.

Is an immersion blender better than a tabletop blender?

Neither is better in every case, because they suit different tasks. An immersion blender is easier to store and clean, and it blends hot soup directly in the pot. A tabletop blender is better for smoothies, frozen fruit and ice, as the jug keeps the contents in contact with the blades.

How many watts do I need in a blender?

For everyday smoothies, soups and sauces, 500 to 600 W is usually enough. For crushing ice, frozen fruit or nuts, aim for around 1000 W or more. Higher wattage generally means faster blending, but blade design and jug shape also affect the result.

Can blender parts go in the dishwasher?

It depends on the model, so check the manual. Many blenders in our range have dishwasher-proof jugs, beakers or blades, but the motor unit must never be submerged or washed in a dishwasher. If you wash by hand, rinsing the blade straight after use stops food from drying on.
