Microwaves and mini ovens

Microwaves and mini ovens

Microwaves and mini ovens in our range include solo microwaves, grill and combination models, built-in units and countertop mini ovens for home kitchens and small catering use. Brands include BOSCH, SIEMENS, PANASONIC, SHARP, SEVERIN and MIDEA. With over 200 models, you can compare size, power and cooking functions in one place.

How to choose a microwave or mini oven

Type of appliance. A solo microwave only reheats and defrosts, a grill microwave adds browning, and a combination model also bakes with hot air. A mini oven works like a small conventional oven with top and bottom heating, so it suits toast, pizza and baking rather than quick reheating.

Capacity and size. Most microwaves range from about 17 to 30 litres, and mini ovens are often larger, around 20 to 60 litres. One or two people usually manage with 20 litres or less, while a family benefits from a larger cavity and a turntable wide enough for a dinner plate. Measure your worktop or niche first, and leave space around the appliance for ventilation.

Power and controls. Microwave power is given in watts, and most home models fall between 700 and 1000 W. Higher wattage heats faster and more evenly. Look for several power levels, preset programmes and a clear display or simple dials, depending on how you prefer to operate it.

Built-in or freestanding. Built-in models are made for a kitchen unit or tall cabinet and come with a trim frame, so they line up with other built-in appliances. Freestanding models only need a socket and a flat surface, which makes them easier to move or replace. Check the exact niche dimensions before ordering a built-in unit.

Cleaning and interior. A smooth, easy-to-wipe interior saves time, and a removable turntable or grill rack makes thorough cleaning simpler. In mini ovens, a removable crumb tray and a non-stick or enamelled interior are worth checking.

Frequently asked questions about microwaves and mini ovens

What is the difference between a microwave and a mini oven?

A microwave heats food with microwaves, so it is fast for reheating, defrosting and cooking simple meals. A mini oven heats with elements, like a full-size oven in smaller form, so it browns and bakes but takes longer. Combination microwaves offer both methods in one appliance.

What size microwave do I need?

For one or two people, a microwave of around 20 litres is usually enough. A household of three or more is better served by 25 litres or above, especially if you reheat large plates or use a grill function. Always check the turntable diameter against your largest dish.

Is a combination microwave worth it?

A combination microwave is worth it if you lack space for a separate oven or want to bake and brown as well as reheat. It combines microwave power, a grill and often hot air. If you only reheat drinks and leftovers, a solo microwave is simpler and usually easier to use.

What does inverter technology do in a microwave?

Inverter technology supplies continuous, adjustable power rather than cycling full power on and off. This gives more even heating and gentler defrosting, with fewer cold or overcooked patches. It is most noticeable when defrosting or cooking delicate foods at lower power levels.
