How to choose a hair curler or styling brush
Type of tool. A hot air brush, the most common type in our range, dries and shapes hair in one step and adds volume at the roots. A curling wand has no clamp and gives loose, natural spirals, while a curling iron with a clamp holds the hair in place for more defined curls. An automatic curling iron draws the hair in for you, which helps if you find wrapping awkward. Styling kits bundle several attachments, so one handle can handle both brushing and curling.
Barrel size. A narrow barrel makes tight curls, and a wider one gives soft waves and body. If you want a single tool for different looks, choose a kit with interchangeable heads rather than a fixed barrel.
Heat settings and technology. Most models in our range with this specification offer three heating levels, and a few have two or one. Fine, bleached or coloured hair does better on the lowest setting that still holds a curl. Most stylers use warm heat, some rely on airflow instead, and a small number add steam.
Power. Hot air brushes in our range are mostly rated at 800 W to 1000 W, and higher wattage generally means faster drying. Curling irons and wands need far less power, so wattage matters mainly for hot air brushes.
Cord length and power source. Cords of 1.8 m are the most common in our range, and some are 2 m or 3 m. A longer cord helps if the socket is far from your mirror. Nearly all models run from the mains, and a cordless battery-powered model is the exception.

Is a hot air brush better than a curling iron?
Neither is better overall, because they do different jobs. A hot air brush dries and styles damp hair in one go and gives volume and soft bends. A curling iron works on dry hair and makes more defined, longer-lasting curls.
What is the difference between a curling wand and a curling iron?
A curling wand is a heated barrel without a clamp, so you wrap the hair around it and wear a heat-resistant glove if one is supplied. A curling iron has a clamp that holds the hair against the barrel. Wands tend to give looser, more natural curls, and clamp irons give a neater, more uniform finish.
Which heat setting should I use on fine or damaged hair?
Use the lowest setting that still shapes your hair. Fine, bleached or damaged hair is more easily harmed by high heat, so start low and raise it only if the curl will not hold. Models with three heating levels make this easier to adjust.
How many watts does a hot air brush need?
