This category covers electric shavers, beard trimmers and grooming trimmers for anyone who shaves or tidies up at home. Our range of over 290 models includes Philips, Braun, BaByliss and Remington, from simple battery trimmers to rechargeable shavers with interchangeable heads and attachments.
How to choose a shaver or trimmer
Shaver or trimmer. A shaver cuts close to the skin for a smooth finish, while a trimmer leaves stubble at a set length or shapes a beard. Hybrid models with guard combs can do both reasonably well, which helps if you only want one device.
Foil or rotary. Foil shavers use straight oscillating blades behind a thin screen and suit people who want a very close shave on flatter areas. Rotary shavers use circular heads that follow the curves of the jaw and neck, and many people with thick or uneven growth prefer them.
Battery and charging. Most models in our range with battery details are rechargeable, mainly with Lithium-Ion cells and some with NiMH. Run times of 60 and 120 minutes are the most common, and a one-hour charge is the most frequent charging time listed. A few models run on AA batteries, which is handy for travel because you can swap cells without a socket.
Wet and dry use. Washable heads can be rinsed under a tap, and wet and dry models can be used with foam or gel in the shower. Check the product specification for washable heads or a waterproof rating before you buy, as not every model allows it.
Attachments and spare parts. Look at how many guard lengths are included, whether there is a precision head for edging, and whether replacement foils, blades or heads are easy to find. A shaver is only as good as its cutting parts, and these wear out with use.

Shavers and trimmers: frequently asked questions
Is a foil or rotary shaver better?
Neither is better for everyone. Foil shavers generally give a very close shave on straight areas, while rotary shavers cope well with curves and longer or uneven growth. If you shave daily with light stubble, foil is a good starting point; if you shave every few days, try rotary.
What is the difference between a shaver and a trimmer?
A shaver cuts hair at skin level, while a trimmer cuts hair to a chosen length without shaving it off completely. Trimmers use guard combs to set the length and are used for beards, sideburns and edging. Some hybrid devices include both functions.
How long should a cordless shaver run on one charge?
Most cordless shavers in our range list a run time of 60 or 120 minutes, which usually covers several weeks of daily shaves. Charging often takes around one hour, although some models with older NiMH batteries need much longer. Check both figures on the product page.
How often should I replace the shaver head or blades?
Replace foils, cutters or blades when the shave becomes slower or starts to pull, which for many people is roughly every one to two years. Frequent use, thick hair and poor cleaning shorten that period. Rinsing the head after each use and following the maker's guidance on lubrication helps the parts last longer.
