How to choose a laptop or tablet stand

Device size and weight. Check the screen sizes the stand supports and its stated load limit before anything else. A 17-inch laptop is considerably heavier than a 10-inch tablet, and a stand built for one may wobble or slip with the other.

Fixed or height-adjustable. A fixed stand is simpler and usually cheaper, but it only suits one desk and one user. Height adjustment is listed on several models in our range, and it matters if the screen is shared or if you want the top edge level with your eyes.

Desk stand or mounted solution. A desk stand can be moved, folded away and used with a different device. A mounted or fixed solution saves desk space and keeps a tablet at a set position, which makes more sense for a kiosk, counter or wall-side workstation.

Airflow and stability. An open frame lets air reach the underside of a laptop, which helps when it runs warm under load. Look for non-slip pads or a solid base so the device stays put while you type.

Colour and finish. Colour is a minor factor, but it is worth matching the stand to your device and desk. Where colour is listed, black is the most frequent, followed by silver, grey and pearl.

Does a laptop stand improve posture?

Yes, it can, because raising the screen brings it closer to eye level and reduces the need to look down. The stand only solves half of the problem, though. Once the laptop is raised, the built-in keyboard and trackpad become awkward to reach, so most people add a separate keyboard and mouse.

Do I need an adjustable stand?

An adjustable stand is worth having if more than one person uses the desk or if you change your seating position during the day. If you always work at the same desk and the fixed height suits you, a simpler stand does the job. Several adjustable models are available in our range.

Will a stand fit my tablet as well as my laptop?

Some stands are designed for both, but this depends on the product, so check the supported screen sizes and the width of the holder. Tablets are thin and light, so they need a holder with a secure grip or lip. Laptops need a wider, sturdier platform.

Can a laptop stand help with overheating?

It can help, since lifting the laptop leaves a gap under the body and allows air to circulate. A stand does not replace proper cooling or a clean fan. If the laptop overheats regularly, it is worth checking the vents for dust as well.
